Skin cycling: How to adopt the four-night skincare routine
By Dan Kauna, August 30, 2026If your skin has been drier or more irritated than usual, you might be using too many active ingredients, too often. That is the exact problem skin cycling was designed to solve.
It is a four-night routine that gives your skin room to recover between treatments, and it has quickly become one of the most talked-about skincare methods in recent years.
What the four nights involve
Skin cycling was coined by New York dermatologist Dr Whitney Bowe. The idea is simple. On night one, you use a chemical exfoliant to clear away dead skin cells.
On night two, you apply a retinoid, which speeds up cell turnover and helps fade dark spots and fine lines.

Nights three and four are recovery nights. You skip the actives completely and stick to a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser. Then the cycle starts again.
Exfoliants and retinoids both work by pushing your skin to renew itself faster. Used every night without a break, they can wear down your skin barrier, leaving it dry, tight and inflamed.
The built-in rest days are what set skin cycling apart from most routines.
Does it work, and is it safe for our skin?
The science backs up the rest days. A 2024 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested a triple acid exfoliant on people with sensitive skin and reported “no instances of skin irritation throughout the duration of this study,” even though half the participants had reactive skin going in.
That result matters, because irritation is the main reason people give up on retinoids and exfoliants altogether.

For skin with more melanin, research shows retinoids carry no extra risk of irritation compared with lighter skin tones. The concern is different: if irritation does happen and goes unmanaged, it can leave behind dark marks that take longer to fade.
This is where the recovery nights earn their place. Skip a night whenever your skin feels tight, red or sore, and let it settle before starting again.
You do not need an expensive routine to try this. A basic glycolic or salicylic acid toner, an affordable retinol, and a fragrance-free moisturiser cover all four nights.
Add sunscreen every morning, since exfoliants and retinoids make skin more sensitive to sun, and Nairobi sun is strong most of the year. Start slowly, pay attention to how your skin responds, and adjust the cycle to suit it.
