What Next? : Tips for choosing university, college or TVET after KCSE results

By , January 13, 2026

The release of KCSE results marks a critical turning point for thousands of candidates across the country. For many, the grades open doors to universities, colleges, vocational institutions or short professional courses.

While the results provide direction, students must take the time to make informed decisions that align with their interests, abilities, and long-term career goals.  This is the stage where decisions matter most. Your results help point you in a direction, but the choice you make should be based on understanding yourself, your options and what kind of future you want to build.

1. Start with yourself

After KCSE, advice comes from everywhere. Friends are choosing certain courses, relatives are pushing familiar careers, and social media makes some paths look more glamorous than they really are. Before listening to all that, take time to reflect on yourself.

Think about the subjects you enjoyed, the skills you naturally lean towards and the kind of work that excites you. Choosing a path that fits your interests makes learning easier and increases your chances of sticking with it even when things get tough.

2. Understand what your results mean for your options

Your KCSE grade determines what programmes you qualify for, but it does not determine your value or potential. Higher grades may open the door to degree courses, while other grades lead to diplomas, certificates or vocational training.

Each of these options has its own strengths. What matters is choosing a path that matches both your results and your abilities. Being realistic helps you avoid frustration and sets you up for steady progress.

3. University, college or TVET?

University suits students who enjoy academic study and want to pursue careers that require deep theoretical knowledge. College and TVET institutions are ideal for those who prefer practical learning and hands-on skills.

These paths often lead to quicker entry into the job market or self-employment. None of these options is better than the other. The right choice depends on how you learn best and what kind of work you see yourself doing in the future.

4. Think beyond the course name to the career

A course title can sound impressive, but it is important to ask what comes after graduation. Look at where the skills you gain can be applied and whether there are opportunities to grow, specialise or even start your own business. Understanding how a course connects to real jobs helps you make a decision that is useful not just now, but years down the line

5. Plan with flexibility in mind

The path you choose after KCSE does not have to be permanent. Many people start with one qualification and later upgrade or change direction entirely. Life changes, interests grow, and new opportunities come up.

What matters is starting somewhere solid and being open to learning along the way. With commitment and adaptability, every path can lead to success.
KCSE results mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Whether you choose university, college or TVET, the most important thing is to make a choice that feels right for you and gives you room to grow.
