Knowing how to identify scams and protect yourself is essential if you want to enjoy online shopping safely.
Check for physical address and contact information
One of the first things to look for is whether the business provides a physical address, phone number, or email you can verify. Legitimate sellers are usually transparent about their location and respond to inquiries promptly.
A business that only has a P.O. Box, a generic email, or no phone number at all is a major warning sign. Trying to contact the seller and receiving no response is often an indicator that the business is not trustworthy.
Read reviews and customer feedback
Customer reviews can reveal a lot about the reliability of a seller. Searching for feedback online can help you understand other people’s experiences. Be cautious if a business has no reviews or mostly negative ones.
Genuine reviews often provide details about delivery times, product quality, or customer service. While some dishonest sellers create fake reviews, careful reading usually reveals which experiences are real. Look for reviews with photos or specific descriptions to make sure they are authentic.
Prices that looks good to be true
Low prices can be tempting, but deals that are too good to be true often are. Scammers attract buyers with extremely cheap products, hoping they will pay without checking the legitimacy of the business. Comparing prices with other reputable sellers can help you spot suspiciously low offers.
Remember that very low prices may mean the product is fake, or worse, it may never arrive at all.
Examine the website carefully
The website itself can provide clues about whether the business is genuine. Look for professionalism in design, complete pages such as “About Us” and “Return Policy,” and proper security features like HTTPS. Typos, broken links, or content copied from other sites are red flags. Legitimate sellers take the time to provide detailed information about their business, products, and policies.
Use safe payment methods
Payment method is critical in protecting yourself. Always use secure options like credit cards or trusted online payment platforms. Avoid paying by direct bank transfers, mobile money to unknown numbers, or cash deposits. Scammers prefer untraceable payments because it becomes difficult or impossible to recover your money once it is sent.
Trust your instincts
Scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring buyers to act quickly. Messages about limited stock or special “today only” deals are common tactics. Take your time, research the seller, and do not rush into any purchase. Trusting your instincts is just as important as checking reviews and contact information. If something feels off, it probably is.
