Why Gen Z and Millennials are getting grey hair early and embracing it
By Valerian Khakayi, August 27, 2025Grey hair, once associated with ageing, is getting a new meaning among the younger generation. Across Kenya, more Gen Z and millennials, some in their 20s and 30s, are noticing strands of grey appearing earlier than expected.
But unlike the past, when older people would quickly dye over grey to appear younger, the younger generation is choosing to embrace the look with confidence.
For many years, grey hair was considered something to hide, a marker of maturity that came with age and responsibility. Today, however, young people are rewriting that narrative. Instead of feeling ashamed, they see grey as a chance to stand out, redefine beauty, and express individuality while maintaining their youthful vibe.
Cause of premature grey hair
According to dermatologists, premature greying can be linked to genetics, stress, or nutritional gaps, factors that are increasingly common in today’s fast-paced lifestyle.
For young Kenyans juggling studies, careers, and side hustles, spotting a few silver strands has become almost normal. But rather than viewing grey hair as a burden, Gen Z and millennials are redefining it as part of their identity.
Embracing grey hair
These days, it’s not unusual to spot young people confidently rocking natural greys or even enhancing the look by dyeing their hair silver. Social media has amplified the trend, with TikTok and Instagram creators showing how grey can be chic, edgy, and stylish.
From natural silver streaks to intentionally dyed silver hair,Gen Z and millennials are proving that youthful energy is more about attitude than hair colour.
By openly embracing grey hair, Gen Z and millennials are breaking away from the habits of older generations. What was once mocked as “old” is now seen as trendy, stylish, and even aspirational. For them, grey hair is not a sign of ageing but a symbol of confidence, authenticity, and a changing definition of style.

Changing the norm
This change reflects a bigger cultural shift: society is slowly shedding the stigma around ageing features. Where the older generation felt pressured to conceal their greys, today’s youth are showing that natural beauty can coexist with modern style.
In doing so, Gen Z and millennials are not only embracing their individuality but also dismantling outdated norms that once tied self-worth to age.
