Settling for who? How Gen Z women are rewriting rules of adulthood
By Ascah Mwango, July 28, 2025For decades, adulthood was served as a predictable three-course meal: finish school, get married, have babies. And if you dared otherwise, aunties everywhere would gasp like you just cursed in church. But Gen Z women are politely returning the meal, asking for the à la carte menu, and ordering solo travel, therapy, apartment keys, and a side of soft life.
Across TikTok, Instagram and the streets of Nairobi, young women are unlearning the fairytales and flipping the script on what growing up is supposed to look like. Gone is the pressure to tick off the marriage box by 27. In its place, the quiet joy of signing a lease, buying a couch, sleeping diagonally in your bed, and not having to share your fries or your future with anyone who has not done the healing work.
Keys over rings
Women of this generation are celebrating house keys and car keys now.
Nothing hits quite like walking into your apartment, shoes off, bra off, peace on. Whether it is renting a tiny studio with an amazing view of traffic or buying your first home with a mortgage and Gen Z women are doing it for themselves. And they are not waiting for a wedding to start nesting. They are already shopping for throw pillows and creating Pinterest boards for their dream spaces. Have you seen those house keys’ pictures on the internet?

It is not just about the four walls; it is the freedom that comes with it. The “I can leave my towel on the couch if I want” kind of freedom. The “I want blackout curtains and pink wallpaper and no one can stop me” freedom. It is adulting on your terms with rent receipts to prove it.
Not against marriage but…
These women are not against marriage. They are just not sprinting into it like it is a flash sale that ends at midnight.
Relationships are not off the table. They just are not the only table. More women are choosing to focus on their emotional well-being first. For some, that means therapy. For others, it is going back to school, building a career, or simply getting to know themselves deeply before inviting anyone else into their world.
There is less pressure to constantly prove worthiness through partnership. Instead, there is more interest in creating a stable, joyful lifeone that does not depend on external validation.
Not lonely
There is a calm confidence growing among Gen Z women, one that does not fear solitude. Living alone is no longer a sign of loneliness, but a lifestyle choice rooted in self-awareness. Many are finding contentment in quiet routines, cosy evenings, and meaningful time with themselves. The joy is real, and it shows up in small ways: decorating a first apartment, cooking for one, or spending Sunday mornings journaling in bed.
What used to be seen as a waiting phase is now being celebrated as a whole season of growth. Women are not sitting around hoping life will start when someone else shows up. Life is happening, beautifully and boldly, right now.
Across Kenyan cities, the shift is visible. Whether it is weekend retreats, wellness events, or community spaces focused on healing and empowerment, there is a collective movement towards self-prioritisation, and it is thriving.
Brands and the self-made woman
It is not just individuals embracing this new rhythm; brands are following suit. Financial institutions are now designing products that speak to independent women investing in homes, businesses, or personal milestones.
Wellness brands are responding too, offering services that support mental health, rest, and reflection. From skincare to fitness, the message is shifting less about impressing others, more about honouring self.
Pop-up markets in Nairobi now include vendors selling journals, essential oils, and home decor tools that support a soft, grounded life. This is not just a phase; it is a lifestyle being built intentionally, one choice at a time.
Adulthood, for Gen Z women, no longer comes with rigid definitions. It is being reimagined softly, bravely, and beautifully. Whether it is signing a lease, booking a solo trip, buying furniture, or simply resting without guilt, the path is no longer straight or standard.
There is more than one way to grow up. And maybe, for this generation, the most powerful version of success is not about being chosen it is about choosing yourself, and being deeply at peace with that choice.
