Mashujaa Day 2025: 5 things Kitui stands to gain for hosting the celebration
By Aloys Michael, October 14, 2025Mashujaa Day 2025 will be more than just a celebration in Kitui County; it will be a turning point.
As the country prepares to honour its heroes on October 20, 2025, Kitui is getting ready to host this important national event for the first time in history.

Already, the transformation is visible. Roads are being upgraded, public facilities are under construction, and national attention is turning toward Kitui.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo recently visited the key project sites and assured the public that 80 per cent of the preparations are complete.
“The stadium is almost ready. The remaining work is mostly roofing, and we are confident it will be done on time,” he said.
The new Ithookwe Stadium, which will host the national celebrations.
Mashuja Day 2025’s theme is “Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Energy Solutions,” and Kitui is not only the host but also a symbol of the energy revolution that the country is aiming for.
Here are five big gains Kitui County will reap from this national celebration:
Infrastructure
Hosting Mashujaa Day comes with a major boost in infrastructure. Over 10 kilometres of roads linking Ithookwe Stadium to Kitui State Lodge are being upgraded by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
These upgrades will not only ease movement during the event but will also benefit traders, commuters, and emergency services in the long term.
The Ithookwe Airstrip is also undergoing renovation to handle official flights and dignitaries. Once completed, this will improve air connectivity and open doors to tourism, business travel, and emergency services in Kitui.

Local Business boost
With thousands of guests expected in Kitui during the celebration week, the local economy is set to benefit. Hotels, restaurants, transport providers, and food vendors are gearing up for increased demand. Traders in Kitui town and nearby markets are also preparing to take advantage of the influx.
This temporary rise in business activity is expected to put money directly in the hands of residents and boost local livelihoods.
The government has also promised to ensure that small and medium enterprises are involved in service delivery during the event.

Permanent public amenities
The newly constructed Ithookwe Stadium, which will host up to 10,000 people, is not just for one-day use. After Mashujaa Day, it will serve as a venue for sports, school competitions, county events, and even national tournaments. This is a long-term gain for the youth and sporting talent in Kitui.
Similarly, improvements at the State Lodge and the upgraded roads will remain in place, supporting administration, public events, and easier access to government services.
Stronger national-county partnerships
Mashujaa Day preparations have strengthened ties between the national government and the Kitui County Government, led by Governor Julius Malombe. Both levels of government have worked together closely to ensure that all projects are running smoothly.
This partnership has led to better coordination in project delivery and shows that shared goals can bring about real change. It also places Kitui in a better position to lobby for more national investments in the future.

The green energy
The biggest win for Kitui may be in the area of energy. The celebration has come with a full “Energy Week 2025”, that is ongoing at Kitui Teachers Training College from October 13 to 19, 2025.
It brings key stakeholders to exhibitions, panel discussions, innovation showcases, clean energy project launches, and youth competitions.
The aim is to raise awareness about sustainable energy, clean cooking, and the use of technology in energy access. Kitui has already made some progress in this space; 8000 homes were connected to electricity in 2022 under the Last Mile project, and solar power is being installed in schools and health centres.
But challenges remain. Only 24.4 per cent of households in Kitui use clean cooking methods.
The event will push for increased access to LPG, electric cooking, and renewable options. New projects such as briquette machines, charcoal kilns, and additional electricity connections will be launched.
Mshujaa Day will also promote science and technology careers among youth, encourage investment in green solutions, and give Kitui a central role in shaping Kenya’s clean energy future.
