Nothing is quite as annoying as getting an SMS alert that your data bundle is depleted, especially when you’re watching a lit YouTube video.

Having to pause mid-way, purchase more data and continue often kills the vibe. And let’s face it, you don’t always have airtime or mobile money to get back online.

Thankfully, there are several data-saving hacks that can keep you enjoying your favourite videos for longer:

Capitalise on Wi-Fi

If you have Wi-Fi at home, in school, or at the office, you can make use of  the YouTube download feature on your mobile device.

Available in select countries (Kenya is one of them), the feature allows app users to save clips on the app and watch them later.

To download the video: go to your YouTube app, select the video you would like to save, and click on the download button. The video will be saved in your library, and you can continue to view it offline.

Not all videos, however, have this feature. The memory available on your device can also limit how many videos you can save.

Check your resolution

Videos uploaded on YouTube can be consumed in in various video qualities, 4K to 144P – depending on the uploaded quality and your phone’s internet connectivity.

YouTube automatically offers you the best possible quality based on these two factors.

While watching videos in high definition gives  you a wonderful viewing experience, but it comes at a higher data cost per video.

You can manually change this by clicking the three dots below your video (mobile/TV) or the settings wheel  (computer) and selecting “Quality”.

From there, you can pick a lower resolution and reduce your data bundle usage per video.

Get Safaricom YouTube Bundles

While there are a lot of  data bundle offers in the market, Safaricom’s Blaze YouTube Bundles are quite affordable.

For as little as Ksh.20, subscribers can get up to 200MBs.

To register, simply Dial *555*55# and #JinicenaYoutube.  You can then proceed to enjoy your videos for less.
