Exams can be stressful, and even students who study hard sometimes lose marks because of small mistakes. The key isn’t just studying long hours but studying smart, staying calm, and paying attention to details.

Everyone makes mistakes under pressure, but learning to avoid them can make a big difference in results. These tips are useful for everyone, whether you’re sitting national exams or just school tests.

Here are five ways to avoid common exam mistakes:

Don’t waste time

Spending too much time on one question is a mistake many learners make. You might get stuck and run out of time for easier questions.

A quick scan of the paper at the start helps you decide which questions to tackle first.

Practising past papers under timed conditions also makes it easier to manage your time and reduces anxiety during the real exam.

Read instructions carefully

Missing instructions can cost you marks. Sometimes questions ask for more than one answer or a specific format.

Always underline key points and double-check that your answer matches what is asked. Pay attention to words like “explain,” “compare,” or “justify” They tell you exactly what the examiner wants.

Revise smart, not just hard

Reading notes isn’t enough. Make short summaries, use flashcards, and try past papers.

A revision timetable helps you cover all subjects and makes you feel ready on exam day. Practising regularly also helps you remember things faster and builds confidence.

Group study sessions can also be useful, but only if you stay focused.

Avoid careless mistakes

Small errors like calculation mistakes, missing numbers, or wrong spellings can lose marks. Slow down, double-check your answers if there’s time, and make sure everything is clear and correct on the answer sheet.

Keeping a neat answer sheet reduces stress and avoids confusion for the examiner.

Stay calm

Stress can make you forget even what you know. Don’t panic if a question looks hard. Take a deep breath, read it carefully, and move on if needed.

Being calm helps you think clearly and answer better. Practising relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or brief stretches, can help you stay focused.

Take care of yourself

Sleep well, eat properly, and drink water. Being healthy helps you concentrate and think clearly during exams. Avoid last-minute cramming it usually increases stress and doesn’t help much.

This year, about 3,424,836 learners will sit for national exams in Kenya, 1,298,089 in KPSEA and 1,130,669 in KJSEA. Even learners not take these exams can use these tips.

Practising smart study habits, managing time, and staying calm builds confidence and prepares you for any test.
