Chances are high that the song playing is by Ken Wa Maria, one of the region’s most celebrated and consistent musicians.
His deep voice, catchy lyrics, and mastery of rhythm have made him an icon whose music continues to speak to the emotions of his people.

Humble beginnings and education
Ken Wa Maria, born Kennedy Wambua Ngunze in Machakos County, discovered his love for music early in life.
After completing high school, he moved to Nairobi in search of better opportunities.
Like many young Kenyans chasing their dreams, he took up casual jobs in the juakali sector and later sold clothes in Gikomba Market before joining the University of Nairobi.
There, he studied Business Management and later Statistics, a move that helped him gain the discipline and focus that would later define his career.
His musical journey began in the Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir.

An Italian priest introduced him and other young choir members to instruments and basic music training.
What started as a simple church hobby gradually turned into a lifelong passion that shaped his future in ways he never imagined.

Ken Wa Maria began recording music in his native Kamba language, targeting audiences who connected deeply with traditional beats and everyday life stories.
His breakthrough came in 2014 with the release of Fundamentals, a hit that quickly spread beyond Ukambani and made him a national name.

He laeads the Yatta Orchestra International Band, a team of talented musicians who travel and perform with him. The group consists of around 18 members who rotate during performances.

Over the years, Ken’s mentorship has birthed more than 40 other bands and solo artists, proving his significant influence in shaping the Kamba benga sound.
Ken Wa Maria’s discography includes popular songs such as My Dear Mwende, Shalia, Kazi ni Kazi, and Lupita Nyong’o, along with albums like Mchagua Jembe si Mkulima and Fundamentals Remix.
