Willis Raburu calls on govt to make education free
Media personality Willis Raburu, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, called on the government to make education free nationwide.
Referencing reports that Mathira member of the national assembly, Eric Mwangi Wamumbi, had made education free in his constituency, Raburu questioned why it would not be possible for the government to do the same across the whole country.
“If Mathira MP Wamumbi can make day secondary education fully free… then the government should… ama is it too early in the morning to think yawa!” Raburu posted.

Free education across constituencies
This came after the MP declared at an education event in Mathira West Sub-County on Monday, January 19, 2026, that education would not be free for day school students all across the constituency.
“Watoto waende shule wakasome, na mimi nimesomeshwa kwa tabu. Watoto wetu wote wa day school hapa mathira school fees ni free of charge, hakuna kulipa hata shilingi. Mimi nimekua nikijipanga na tumekaa chini na BOM na principals wa shule na tukafanya hesabu na ile pesa tumekubaliana niko nayo na tunalipa next week.”
Loosely translated as, “Children should go to school and study; I myself was educated through great hardship. For all our day school children here in Mathira, school fees are free of charge; they will not pay a single shilling. I have been organising myself, and we have sat down with the Board of Management (BOM) and school principals to do the math. I have the money we agreed upon, and we are making the payment next week,” he stated.
This was barely a week after Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro slashed day school fees to Ksh500 for students across his constituency, days after raising concerns about the government plan to hike school fees.
However, President William Ruto’s government dismissed the claims, insisting that school fees will not be increased.

Nonetheless, Ndindi Nyoro’s initiative is set to transform the lives of over 12,000 students across 65 public day secondary schools in Kiharu, significantly enhancing the affordability and accessibility of education.
The new fee structure will be implemented for all enrolled students starting in term one of 2026. Furthermore, the programme includes a robust nutritional component, guaranteeing a daily lunch for every learner, including on Saturdays, to support their academic journey.
