‘Stop the nonsense’ – DJ Xclusive tells Kenyans to end tree-hugging trend

Radio personality DJ Xclusive has urged Kenyans to stop participating in the tree-hugging challenge.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Xclusive stressed that hugging trees is not a career path and called on participants to stop the nonsense, adding that such challenges serve little purpose beyond temporary social media attention.

“Dear Kenyans, tree-hugging is not a career path. Kindly stop the nonsense.” Xclusive wrote.

Truphena sparks trend

The craze began with environmental activist Truphena Muthoni, who went viral in December 2025 after completing a 72-hour tree hug in Nyeri County.

Her campaign was focused on environmental conservation, climate change, and mental health awareness. Truphena’s high-profile challenge earned her the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) from President William Ruto, highlighting her dedication to environmental stewardship.

Her efforts inspired many young Kenyans to try similar endurance challenges, hoping to gain recognition or support for causes they care about.

Pastor Follows Up

Following Truphena, Pastor Jimmy Irungu launched an 80-hour tree-hugging campaign in January 2026 to raise awareness about cancer, a growing health concern affecting families across Kenya.

His attempt ended dramatically during the 79th hour when he collapsed and was rushed to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital for medical attention.

Inspired by Truphena and the pastor, multiple young Kenyans have taken up tree-hugging, posting videos online to attract donations or gifts.

Sixteen-year-old Stephen Gachanja revealed on Thursday, January 8, 2026, that he was attempting a 50-hour tree hug with the support of his parents.

“This is tough and mentally draining,” Gachanja said. “I’m not eating or drinking for the 50 hours, and I do not plan to do either.”

Others, including a man in Nanyuki, have also embarked on endurance challenges.

Many participants admitted that the feat is physically and mentally draining, with some going without food or drink for hours.
