Shock in Mombasa as women and a child stage naked prayers on the streets

Residents of Chaani Estate in Mombasa have been left in shock after a family of four, comprising three women, one man and a child, was found walking naked through the streets while holding prayers, claiming the unusual act was part of their religion and way of worship.

The bizarre incident, which unfolded in Chaani on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, attracted large crowds of curious residents, many of whom struggled to comprehend what they were witnessing.

According to eyewitnesses, the group walked through the neighbourhood completely naked while praying fervently and speaking loudly as they moved from one point to another.

Several residents claimed the group is well known within the area for regularly preaching at a nearby street corner before holding additional prayer sessions at their home.

One resident said the unusual sight left him so stunned that he could no longer continue with his daily business.

“I thought it was a demonic thing because I was at my shop when I suddenly saw them pass by here naked. I was so confused that I could not even continue selling, as I had never seen anything like that before. There were three women, one man and a child, all walking naked,” the resident said.

Another witness described the incident as one of the strangest experiences he had ever witnessed, saying the group repeatedly stopped to lie on the ground before getting up and continuing with their prayers.

“I saw them and even started wondering whether I was in another world. I have never seen this kind of thing. They would lie down while naked, then stand up again and continue walking while speaking in what sounded like tongues. I have never witnessed anything like that,” he said.

Residents further claimed the group had become familiar figures in the neighbourhood because of their frequent public preaching sessions.

One local revealed that the same women had previously been seen urging members of the public to repent before the latest incident unfolded.

“These people have been holding prayers and preaching near Chaani Corner, and they also conduct other prayers at home. The clothes they removed are still here, and I feel like this is a cult. They appear to be in some strange religion, and I think they are being misled into doing this. One of the women is always preaching and telling people to repent, and yesterday they were repenting themselves,” another resident claimed.

The incident quickly attracted police attention after concerned members of the public alerted authorities.

Police officers responded to the scene before taking four persons of interest into custody as investigations into the unusual incident commenced.

Authorities are now expected to establish the circumstances that led to the naked prayer procession and determine whether the incident is linked to a religious sect or any other unlawful activities.
