Saumu Mbuvi: Being a single mother should be added as a superpower
By Paulette Mboga, February 7, 2026Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s daughter, Saumu Mbuvi, has spoken out in praise of single mothers, saying their strength and resilience deserve recognition.
In a post on Saturday, February 7, 2026, she said raising children alone while rebuilding one’s own life takes courage that often goes unnoticed.
“When u see any single mother out there doing it all by herself… while rebuilding herself, give her flowers,” Saumu said.
She added that single mothers carry many responsibilities at the same time and deserve respect for it.
Saumu said single mothers play multiple roles daily, often without support.

“We wear so many hats,” she said, pointing to the emotional, financial and personal demands that come with raising children alone.
According to Saumu, society should change how it views single motherhood.
“Being a single mother should be added as a superpower,” she said, describing the role as one that requires strength, patience and determination.
She also shared a message of appreciation.
“Love and respect to all single mothers,” Saumu said, urging people to acknowledge the effort and sacrifice that come with the journey.
Voices defending single mothers
Saumu’s remarks echo sentiments shared earlier by Maureen Waititu, who last year spoke strongly against the shaming of single mothers. Maureen said negative attitudes toward single mothers are harmful and unfair.

“People who do this to single mothers make me sick,” Maureen said in an Instagram message on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
She criticised those who judge women without understanding their situations. Maureen defended single mothers, saying they are often misunderstood in society. She said many of them work hard to provide for their children despite facing constant judgment.
“Single moms are the most noble, hardworking women I know,” Maureen said, adding that their efforts are rarely appreciated.
She described them as women who continue to show up for their children despite challenges. To reinforce her message, Maureen shared a video of a man speaking in defence of single mothers. In the clip, the man questioned why society chooses to treat single mothers with cruelty instead of compassion.
Both say respect, understanding, and support should replace judgment. Their messages show that there is a need for a shift in attitude, where single motherhood is seen not as a weakness.
