Ruto gives Ksh1M to Kapsabet Girls High School to buy bread
By Nancy Marende, March 12, 2026President William Ruto sparked laughter during a visit to Kapsabet Girls High School after promising the school Ksh1 million to buy bread following a light-hearted exchange with the head girl.
Speaking during the visit on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the head girl addressed the president, expressing gratitude while carefully avoiding making a specific request.
“We were just requesting that whatever it is we will appreciate,” she said.
The student explained that the school had many needs but preferred to leave the decision to the president.
“Because I don’t want to be specific on what we want because our desires are a lot, but we believe you are a man who is going to do it for us, and we want to say thank you,” she added.
Her humble remarks amused the president, who responded with a spontaneous pledge that drew laughter from the students.
“You have spoken on behalf of these 1,600 girls and therefore I am going to give you and your teacher Ksh1 million to buy bread,” Ruto said.
The president added that he would return to the school at a later date to discuss other matters in more detail.

“Alafu nitarudi hapa siku ingine kuongea zaidi,” he said in Swahili, meaning he would come back another day to continue the conversation.
This came shortly after students were hospitalised after falling into a septic tank at Kapsabet School for the Deaf; one student was confirmed dead.
According to reports, the incident occurred as the learners rushed to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade passing by the school.
The students stood on an old 20-foot septic tank, which collapsed under their weight, causing the fall.
Emergency responders quickly rescued the students, who are now receiving treatment at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, while authorities investigate the cause and review school safety measures.
Following the incident, Ruto stopped at Kapsabet School for the Deaf, where he expressed regret over the disaster and assured a collaborative investigation into the matter.
“I am here on a development tour for this region. I am aware that some students got injured when they came to see me. I am very sorry for the accident, and we will look into the matter together with the county government. I have assessed the school and realised that it needs some infrastructure development. For that, I will leave you Ksh 5 million,” Ruto added.
