Pierra Makena advises young creatives against having kids early

Veteran DJ and media personality Pierra Makena has urged young creatives, particularly aspiring female DJs, not to rush into having children early in their careers.

Speaking during an interview on the night of Friday, March 27, 2026, Makena opened up about her own journey into motherhood. She revealed that she waited until she was 35 to have her child, feeling emotionally and mentally ready.

She admitted that balancing motherhood with the demands of club DJing was not easy. Night shifts became nearly impossible, and she struggled to maintain the pace that her career required.

“You have to be with the child. You can’t go at night. Bro, I broke this. Because now you can’t work, you can’t go to a club, and life has hit rock bottom,” she recounted.

Reflecting on that period, she said it forced her to pause, reassess, and rediscover herself, realising that career and personal life had to be carefully managed.

Career reality check

Makena described the period after giving birth as a turning point. She noted that many young female DJs entered the scene during this time because opportunities arose while she had stepped back.

“That’s when most female DJs came on, because there was an opportunity,” she said. Instead of feeling defeated, she used the pause to rethink her career. “If ever you feel stuck, sit back, restructure yourself, pause, think, and start again,” Makena advised.

She also emphasised resilience and adaptability, sharing that she had been fired, lost clients, and faced scepticism in her 15-year career.

“I’ve been fired from jobs. I’ve lost work from clients, big brands, but I’ve never stopped,” she said. Makena highlighted that success isn’t about copying others. “Do not try to be like somebody else. You’re very special the way you are. That’s the talent that will take you somewhere,” she added.

Beyond her personal story, Makena stressed the importance of planning. She encouraged young DJs to build skills, create opportunities, and secure financial stability before becoming parents. “When you start, do not stop. So many things will come. There are so many things you’ll be told you can’t do. Do not stop,” she urged.
