President William Ruto is expected to grace the ninth edition of the Turkana Cultural Festival, popularly known as Tobong’lore.

Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai announced that the President is expected to arrive in Lodwar at the Ekales Centre on 16 December to officially preside over the event.

Governor Lomorukai said the county is also expecting more than 10,000 delegates from neighbouring countries, including Ethiopia, Uganda and South Sudan, for the festival, which will take place from 15 to 18 December in Lodwar.

Tobong’lore, meaning “welcome back home”, is Turkana County’s annual cultural festival that celebrates the rich Turkana heritage.

“The event promotes unity and peaceful coexistence among neighbouring communities while showcasing traditional music, dance, art and the pastoralist way of life. Over the years, the festival has continued to attract national leaders, cultural enthusiasts and tourists to the region,” Lomorukai said.

The governor noted that residents of Turkana have high expectations ahead of President Ruto’s visit, citing promises made by the Head of State regarding development projects in the county.

He expressed hope that the President will address key issues affecting the region and deliver tangible benefits to the people.

Governor Lomorukai also assured visitors, delegates and the business community of their safety, emphasising that Turkana remains a secure destination for investment, tourism and cultural experiences.

He further highlighted Turkana County’s tourism potential, noting that major attractions are centred around Lake Turkana, including Central Island National Park with its volcanic crater lakes, crocodiles and flamingos, as well as the white sandy beaches of Eliye Springs, which are ideal for relaxation and water activities.

Other key sites include the ancient Namoratunga standing stones and vast desert landscapes suitable for adventure safaris.

Lomorukai said the Tobong’lore Festival is expected to boost cultural pride, regional integration and economic activity within Turkana County.
