Ofweneke slams French president Macron over tense University of Nairobi exchange

By , May 12, 2026

Comedian and media personality Dr Ofweneke has criticised French President Emmanuel Macron following his remarks during a tense moment at the University of Nairobi, saying the exchange reflected a mismatch in how modern diplomatic engagements should be handled.

Reacting to the viral moment on his Instagram on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Ofweneke took issue with Macron’s approach and questioned the tone of his remarks during the public engagement.

“Macron must understand that we are not fighting for independence anymore, and his tone during this visit is a little bit weird,” he said.

Ofweneke’s reaction comes after a video went viral showing Macron interrupting a student presentation during an event under the Africa Forward Summit.

The French president, who was seated during the session, walked onto the stage after growing frustrated by noise and interruptions from sections of the audience. He then addressed the crowd directly.

“Excuse me, everybody… it is impossible to speak about culture to have people like this who are super inspired coming here, making a speech with such a noise,” Macron said.

He went on to describe the situation as disrespectful, urging those not interested in the presentation to leave the room.

“This is a total lack of respect, so I suggest that if you have to have a bilateral or speak about something else, you go outside,” he added.

Wider visit moments

Macron’s trip to Kenya has also included lighter cultural exchanges beyond the lecture hall.

He was seen jogging alongside marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge during a morning run in Nairobi, a moment that drew wide public attention.

He also engaged with Kenyan creatives during private cultural interactions, including a dinner where he met singer Bien.

In one of the standout moments, Macron was filmed cooking alongside former rugby star turned chef Dennis Ombachi.
