Singer Nyota Ndogo has narrated how she was repeatedly told she was Kenya’s least beautiful female artiste, a label that deeply affected her over time.

In an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the singer said the comments reached a point where she began to believe them, despite continuing with her music career. She shared her experience while reflecting on how public judgment shaped her view of herself.

“Ilifika mahali mpaka nikajiona, I am not beautiful,” Nyota Ndogo said.

She explained that constant remarks about her looks slowly broke her confidence. According to her, people openly described her as an ugly female musician in Kenya.

“Kwa sababu watu wamekua wakisema mimi ni mwanamziki ambaye ni ugly Kenya,” she said.

Nyota Ndogo added that the comments became so common that they felt ranked.

“Saa hii nadhani niko number 3. Kuna time nilikua number 1. Nikaja nikakua number 2,” she added.

Living with criticism and self-acceptance

Despite the hurtful remarks, Nyota Ndogo said she reached a point where she accepted herself.

“Sitaki kutaja wenzangu, because mimi nafuatilia,” she said, noting that she remains aware of public opinion but no longer lets it define her.

She added that her confidence has grown with time.

“Mimi napenda uso wangu jinsi nilivyo,” Nyota Ndogo said. She also pointed to motherhood as a grounding force in her life.

“Saa hii mimi ni mama wa watoto wa watatu,” she added, saying her priorities have changed.

Last year in November, Nyota Ndogo also addressed criticism about her dark skin. She responded to a comment made on Instagram on Tuesday, November 24, 2025, that read, “shida yako wewe ni mweusi sana.” The singer firmly defended herself.

“Sasa nakujibu. Hii rangi sio eti ni gali. Ni haipatikani dukani. Kwaivyo ni special,” Nyota Ndogo said.

Her response showed pride in her skin tone and a refusal to be shamed.

She has spoken about this issue before, consistently pushing back against remarks about her complexion. Nyota Ndogo has rejected the idea that lighter skin is the standard of beauty.

She embraces who she is and encourages self-love and confidence in a society where beauty standards still leave many behind.
