My work was tangible – Lilian Ng’ang’a reflects on Machakos First Lady role
Former Machakos County First Lady Lilian Ng’ang’a has defended her time in office, saying she is not hesitant to speak about the work she did while serving alongside former Governor Alfred Mutua.
In a video posted on her Instagram page on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Lilian said a call from a stranger pushed her to openly revisit her role as First Lady and talk about her book and experiences without fear of judgment. She maintained that her work in Machakos County was real, visible, and measurable, adding that she will continue speaking about it in her own voice.
“A call from a stranger reminded me to discuss my Madam FL book without shame or judgment that might come with it. During my time as Machakos County First Lady, what I did was tangible, and I will not shy away from talking about it. Life as Machakos First Lady
During her time as First Lady, Lilian was regularly present at county functions, public outreach programmes, and development initiatives linked to the governor’s office. She often appeared alongside Mutua in events that focused on social welfare, women’s empowerment, and community engagement across Machakos County.
While the First Lady’s role in county governments is not an official constitutional position, it often comes with public expectations, and Lilian was among the more visible figures in that space during Mutua’s tenure. Her presence was closely tied to the county’s public image at the time, especially in development and social programmes.
The book: Madam First Lady
Her reflection is also tied to her book Madam First Lady, where she documents her experience in the role, the pressures that came with public life, and her personal journey while in and after office.

The book presents her perspective on what it meant to be in a high-profile political relationship and the expectations placed on her as a county First Lady. It also touches on her personal growth, identity, and the transition from public life in government circles to a more independent path. In her remarks, she has consistently framed the book as part reflection, part personal record, and part explanation of a life lived in the public eye.
Publicised breakup
Lilian and Mutua later ended their long-term relationship in 2021. The separation was made public, with both initially describing it as amicable, although it later attracted widespread public discussion given their visibility as a political couple.
After the breakup, Lilian gradually stepped away from the political spotlight and began reshaping her public identity, focusing more on personal independence and private life.
She later began a relationship with Kenyan musician Juliani, and the two welcomed a child together. Their relationship has been kept relatively low-profile, with both prioritising privacy and family life over public commentary.
