Mugithi icon Mike Rua recounts last moments before news of son Muiruri’s death reached him

Mugithi singer Mike Rua has shared a blow-by-blow account of where he was and what unfolded before he learned of his son Fredrick Muiruri’s death.

Speaking emotionally during a burial meeting held in his honour at Blue Springs Hotel on Monday, March 16, 2026, Mike explained that he had been with Gathoni shortly before receiving the devastating news, noting that it was after they had spent time together that she informed him that his son had passed away.

He added that immediately after receiving the news, they proceeded together to collect his son’s body before taking it to the Kenyatta University mortuary in Githurai.

“And so we were with Gathoni, and later she told me that my son had passed away. After that, we went together and took my son’s body to KU,” Mike said.

He went on to appreciate the many fans and friends who had already gathered at the facility to stand with the family, noting that their presence and support during that difficult time meant a great deal to him.

“I want to thank the people and fans who had already arrived there and those who came to console us,” Mike added.

Mike further revealed that prior to his son’s death, they had been in communication, explaining that Muiruri had asked him to visit the studio located at his home in Kasarani on Sunday.

He noted that despite receiving the request, he experienced a sense of unease and had visions suggesting that something might happen, which prompted him to make an effort to go to the studio later that night.

“My son’s name is Fredrick Muiruri. For those who know my home in Kasarani, I have a studio there, and my son sometimes is there. We had spoken on the phone, and he had asked me to go to the studio on Sunday. On that day, I had been seeing visions as if something was going to happen,” he stated.

He added that upon arriving at around 11 p.m., he attempted to reach his son by phone, but his calls went unanswered, leading him to assume that the matter was not urgent. He then proceeded to attend an event that was being hosted by Wanjiru wa Waya.

“Because of that, I made an effort and went there at around 11 p.m. When I arrived, I called him, but he did not pick up, so I assumed it was not something urgent. I then went to an event that was being hosted by Wanjiru wa Waya,” Mike said.

Mike further explained that he made additional attempts to reach his son the following morning, but his calls were still not answered.

He noted that later, at around 1 p.m. on Monday, he began receiving multiple phone calls, which he initially assumed were routine, unaware of the tragic news that would soon follow.

He stated that it was later, after parting ways with Gathoni, that she received the information about Muiruri’s death and informed him, leading to the immediate actions they took to move the body to the mortuary.

“The following morning, I called him again, but he still did not pick up. Later, at around 1 p.m. on Monday, I started receiving many phone calls, and I assumed they were just normal calls. But when we were with Gathoni and later parted ways, she got the news and told me that my son had died,” Mike shared.

Obedient boy

Mike then took time to describe his son as a calm and reserved individual who kept to himself and lived a quiet life.

He noted that his personality was quite different from his own public lifestyle.

“We then went and took his body to the KU mortuary in Githurai, and that is where we will meet on Friday when we go to pick up his body. For those who did not know him, he was a calm boy who kept to himself and did not get involved in many things. He was not outgoing like me; he was very calm,” he shared.

He further announced that the family would hold a candle-lighting vigil on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in honour of Muiruri, where they would gather to remember and celebrate his life.

He added that the body would be picked from the Kenyatta University mortuary on Friday as preparations for the final send-off continue.

“On Wednesday, we will hold a candle-lighting here for him and remember the beautiful life he lived,” Mike said.
