Former Machakos County First Lady and author Lilian Ng’ang’a has shared a lighthearted reflection on self-care, ageing, and the everyday relationship people have with makeup and confidence.

In a post shared on Instagram on Friday, May 8, 2026, she documented a self-care moment and opened up about how skin naturally changes with age, noting it is something she has become more aware of over time.

She also reflected on the experience of going out without makeup, admitting that while she does it sometimes, there are still moments when she feels like something is missing before stepping out. It was an honest, everyday confession that sits between confidence and habit, something many people quietly understand even if they do not always say it out loud.

She wondered whether the real goal might be to reach a place where makeup-free days feel completely effortless and carefree.

“A little self-care, as they say:) It’s interesting to see how our skin changes as we age.. Can you leave the house makeup-free? I do sometimes, but still feel like something is missing 😃 Maybe the goal is to go make up free and be carefree – Idk,” she shared.

Monotonous fashion

She recently raised concerns about the lack of originality among online fashion stores.

In a statement shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Lilian said she had been browsing online for dresses but kept encountering stores selling very similar designs. She observed that many fashion pages seem to stock almost identical styles, which makes it difficult for shoppers to find something unique.

She clarified that her comments were not meant to undermine designers or their effort, but pointed out that there is noticeable repetition in what is currently available online. According to her, this sameness has made shopping less exciting, especially for people looking for standout pieces.

Lilian also highlighted West Africa’s fashion scene as a refreshing contrast, describing it as more bold and creative, with designers who experiment with patterns, structure and storytelling in clothing.

She further questioned pricing, suggesting that some of the outfits being sold at high prices do not reflect much originality. She, however, invited her followers to recommend brands doing things differently.

“So I’m online looking for some cute dresses that I can buy. All the suggested shops sort of have the same kind of outfits. Know a brand pushing the limit, offering something different? Tag them here:). Not to discredit people’s work, especially since I’m not a designer, but there’s a monotony in what we see online, at least. I’ve been looking at the West Africa fashion scene and it’s 👌🏾 Do you have or know of a brand offering something different? Tag them here:) I will not mention the inflated prices for now :)” Lilian Ng’ang’a stated.
