Light moment in parliament as MPs tease each other over Arsenal EPL title win

Parliament turned into a light-hearted football stage on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as MPs exchanged jokes and friendly banter over Arsenal’s Premier League win, which ended a 22-year wait for the English club.

The excitement spilt into the House as leaders shifted from national debates to football talk. The moment created laughter and playful interruptions among lawmakers during proceedings.

Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mwenje opened the discussion by bringing up Arsenal’s title win. He said the victory had sparked celebrations and attention from Kenyans across different spaces. Mwenje suggested the matter deserved mention in the House, linking it to the wider excitement in the country.

“I was wondering, honourable speaker, I want to discuss a less important issue. Mr Speaker, over the weekend, Arsenal won the League after 22 years,” Mark Mwenje said.

Football banter fills the chamber

Mugirango South MP Silvanus Osoro responded by insisting that Kenyan football deserved more attention. He said leaders should focus on local teams instead of discussing foreign clubs in Parliament. His remarks added a humorous twist as he defended local football pride.

“We are Kenyans, and we should be speaking of Shabana, Gor Mahia and AFC. We cannot be discussing Arsenal, Mr Speaker. If we are going to discuss EPL, let us discuss Manchester United,” Silvanus Osoro said.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed joined the debate with strong praise for Arsenal. He described the club as one of the biggest in the world and celebrated their achievement with confidence. His remarks drew laughter as he predicted more success for the team.

“Mr Speaker, the world has come to terms that the biggest team in the world, with the biggest following, is Arsenal, Mr Speaker. There is no team like Arsenal, Mr Speaker. I want to say this in conclusion, for those who believe in Arsenal, for those who support Arsenal, 30th is our day, when we are going to conquer the world and floor PSG 3-0,” Junet Mohamed said.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah also added humour to the debate by teasing colleagues over their reactions to the win. He joked about loyalty and mentioned a personal moment involving Mwenje. His comments added more laughter in the House as MPs continued to exchange light remarks.

“I thought honourable Mwenje would be considerate of all the other teams, honourable speaker. I am not sure we can trust the speaker on a matter touching on Arsenal. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Arsenal. I happen to be in London, and we had a 9 am meeting with Mwenje, and Mwenje could not speak because he had lost his voice.” Kimani Ichung’wah said.

Arsenal secured the Premier League title after Manchester City drew 1-1 at Bournemouth, confirming the club’s long-awaited triumph. The win marked the end of a 22-year wait for them, triggering celebrations among supporters globally.
