What to do if stuck in a lift

If you ever get stuck in a lift, staying calm and following these steps can help keep you safe:

  • Stay calm

Take deep breaths. Panicking can make the situation worse.

  • Press the alarm button

Most lifts have an emergency button that alerts building security or emergency services.

  • Use your phone

Call the building management or emergency services if possible. Some lifts also have an emergency phone.

  • Don’t try to force the doors open

Lifts are heavy and can move suddenly, so trying to open the doors yourself can be dangerous.

  • Wait for help

Trained personnel know how to safely get you out. Stay patient and avoid unnecessary movements.

  • Conserve your phone battery

Use your phone sparingly if you are waiting for rescue.

  • Stay visible and make noise

If no one responds right away, use your voice to call for help.

  • Stay away from the lift shaft

Never try to climb out or access the shaft, this is extremely dangerous.
