Inside Moji Shortbabaa’s life, love and gospel journey
By William Muthama, April 6, 2026James Muhia, popularly known as Moji Shortbabaa, is one of Kenya’s most vibrant and resilient gospel artistes.
With his signature energetic style, infectious Afro-pop rhythms blended with heartfelt praise, and a unique ability to mix satire, comedy, and serious faith messages, Moji has carved a special place in the Kenyan gospel music industry.
Born and raised in the humble streets of Ngando, Nairobi, Moji’s early life was marked by modest beginnings.
Growing up in a low-income family, resources were limited, yet music became his refuge and calling from a young age.
His passion took shape during his teenage years as he sang in church and school events, where his lively voice and stage presence began to stand out.
Kelele Takatifu rise
Moji first rose to national prominence as one half of the popular gospel duo Kelele Takatifu alongside his high school friend Silvanus Otieno, famously known as Didi.

For nearly a decade, the group delivered energetic, spirit-filled hits that fused contemporary gospel with upbeat Afro beats. Their lively performances made them favourites in churches, youth conferences, and on radio stations across Kenya.
In 2020, Moji made the bold decision to pursue a solo career. The split from Kelele Takatifu was not without challenges; he has openly described it as one of the darkest periods of his life.
Many questioned whether he could thrive alone, but Moji answered through music. He released powerful solo anthems such as “Highly Favoured,” “Amenitoa Mbali,” “Itakua Ngori,” “Baba Mbaya,” “Mwema,” “Ni Ebeneza,” “Wacha Story,” “Mitumba,” “Shuka Usitumane,” “Dance Ya Kanisa,” and “For Me.”
Hit collaborations breakthrough
His biggest breakout moment came through collaborations, most notably the massive hit “Vimbada” with Jabidii, which dominated charts and earned multiple awards.

Other standout collaborations include “Hajawahi Niangusha” and “Mazuri” with Guardian Angel, “Mtoto wa Mfalme” with Ugandan artist Coopy Bly, “Quality” with Garvey Royal, as well as projects with Benachi and Desito. These partnerships helped expand his reach across East Africa.
Awards and love
Today, Moji Shortbabaa boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, including five Groove Awards and three Sauti Awards.
Beyond music, his natural humour and stage presence have seen him venture into acting in local skits and productions, as well as hosting and emceeing major gospel events.
On the personal front, Moji is happily married to media personality and podcast host Nyawira Gachugi. In December 2025, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl, marking a significant milestone in his personal life.
