Guinness World Record bid kicks off in Mombasa to plant 40K mangroves in 24 hours

A Guinness World Record attempt is underway in Mombasa after Canadian environmentalist Antoine Moses launched a challenge to plant 40,000 mangrove propagules within 24 hours at Tudor Creek.

According to a statement by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the exercise began on Thursday, April 30 2026, at 6:30 am at Mirarani, Tudor Creek in Mombasa County under a mangrove restoration initiative aimed at strengthening coastal ecosystems.

In its official update, KFS described the event as a “Guinness World Record attempt in mangrove restoration,” confirming that Moses is leading the exercise on the ground.

“On 30th April 2026 at 6:30 AM, Antoine Moses will launch an ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of mangroves planted within 24 hours at Mirarani, Tudor Creek, Mombasa County,” The agency stated

Antoine Moses is a Guinness World Record holder known for large-scale tree planting campaigns globally. He previously set a record in Canada after planting 23,060 trees in 24 hours, a milestone that placed him among the world’s most prominent reforestation activists.

Attempt underway

Shortly after the launch, KFS confirmed the exercise was already in progress, posting:

“HAPPENING NOW!!! GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT IN MANGROVE GROWING… Mr Antoine Moses has officially begun his Guinness World Record attempt to plant 40,000 mangrove propagules within 24 hours.”

The agency added that the activity is being carried out in the presence of key stakeholders and partners, with technical support from the Kenya Forest Service at a designated restoration site.

KFS noted that the exercise reflects a strong integration of science-based ecological rehabilitation, public participation, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, highlighting its environmental significance.

24-hour record push

The Mombasa attempt comes days after Kenyan environmentalist Hillary Kibiwott, also known as Buzeki, completed a 24-hour tree planting challenge in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where he planted 23,326 tree seedlings.

Kibiwott’s effort, which aimed at breaking the previous Guinness World Record of 23,060 trees set by Moses in 2021, fell slightly short of his 24,000 target but still marked a significant environmental milestone.

His attempt, held at Kessup Forest Station, drew national attention and praise from government officials and environmental stakeholders.

The Mombasa challenge is expected to end on Friday, May 1, 2026, at around 6:30 am, marking the completion of the 24-hour window as observers watch closely to see if the 40,000-mangrove target will be achieved.
