Evangelist Nick Vujicic opens up on almost ending his life at age 10

Australian motivational speaker and evangelist Nick Vujicic has shared a deeply emotional account of his early childhood struggles, revealing that he once battled suicidal thoughts at just 10 years old.

The evangelist, known globally for his message of hope and resilience, said he went through a painful period where he questioned God because of the suffering he experienced.

“I was suicidal at age 10, I actually blamed God for my pain,” Nick disclosed.

Speaking on Saturday, May 16, 2026, during his visit to Kenya, the evangelist also opened up about his struggles with faith during his younger years, saying that negative experiences with people who identified as Christians made him question his relationship with God.

“There were times I did not want to be a Christian because I had Christians around me that were actually hypocritical; they would say that they are Christians, but they deny God and Christianity in how they live,” he said.

He also noted the imperfections within the church and among leaders sometimes push people away from God rather than drawing them closer.

Nick acknowledged that not all Christian leaders or believers are perfect, adding that human flaws and hypocrisy can create pain for those seeking genuine faith.

“So for whatever reasons maybe some of us are not in a fullness of relationship with Jesus. I am sorry when Christians come and maybe they are the biggest bullies. I know that there are fake leaders; none of us are perfect,” he added.

Nick on fighting depression

Nick, who was born with Tetra-amelia syndrome, a condition characterized by the absence of all four limbs, has been around the world telling his compelling life story.

In his Iam Second video, he candidly shared how unanswered prayer left him, like so many others, in a state of despair and a gnawing sense that God was not only absent but also never there to begin with.

“I went into a very dark place, a depression that lasted five years, and that depression peaked during an attempted suicide of me trying to swallow water and then inhale water to drown myself in the bathtub of my own home,” he recalled.

“I convinced myself there was no hope. I convinced myself that there was no God. But if there was a God, he was simply unfair. I prayed for a miracle. And a miracle did not come.”

Turning point

It was not until he was 13 that Nick experienced an epiphany of sorts, sparked by another physical setback when he injured his small foot, one of the few ways he is able to walk, which ultimately taught him a lifelong lesson.

“All of a sudden, I’m a limbless man who used to walk, who now can’t,And I realise I’ve gotta be thankful for what I have instead of being angry,” he said.

“Jesus said it was done so that the works of God would be revealed through him. And I realised, if God has a plan for a blind man, God’s got a plan for me.”
