Yvonne Mugure: I now understand why happy people keep their marriage private
By Paulette Mboga, August 30, 2026Content creator Yvonne Mugure has opened up about her decision to keep her marriage private, saying she now understands why happy couples choose not to share their relationships widely on social media.
She said her views changed after a year of marriage and she realised that online negativity could affect a relationship.
Mugure explained that when she and her husband were starting, they believed negative comments from people online would not affect them. She said she was naïve at the time and thought they could easily ignore whatever was said about their marriage.
“After a year of marriage, I now understand why happy people keep their marriage off social media. I was so naïve before,” Yvonne Mugure said on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The content creator said she initially believed she and her husband could handle negativity without letting it affect their relationship. However, she explained that things changed as time went on and the impact became more noticeable.
“I was so naïve, like people’s negativity is not gonna affect us; that is where my husband and I were at the beginning. But as time goes on, it does affect you,” Yvonne Mugure said.
Online negativity and marriage
Mugure said negative comments were not the only issue she experienced as a result of having her marriage exposed online. She explained that people she used to know in the past also started trying to come back into her life, something she said affected her marriage.
“Now not only do people say negative things online, which you know are not true, right? I can handle that as a content creator,” Yvonne Mugure said.

She explained that while she can handle negative things said about her because she is a content creator, the situation became different when it started affecting her marriage. Mugure said some people from her past began trying to come back to her.
“But it was affecting my marriage because people that you used to know back in the day start trying to come back to you,” Yvonne Mugure said.
Mugure also said she has been surprised by the number of people who do not want the best for others or believe they do not deserve marriage. She said this was among the lessons she learnt after spending a year in marriage.
