Marvel Studios has picked 23-year-old actress and social media star Maya Boyd to play Ororo Munroe, famously known as Storm, in the upcoming X-Men reboot. Disney confirmed the news during their D23 event in Anaheim, California.

The role marks her big-screen debut as she takes over the comic book character previously played by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp. Boyd took to Instagram to share her excitement with fans shortly after the announcement.

“It’s an honour to be your Storm,” she wrote.

From Broadway to the Big Screen

Before catching Marvel’s eye, Boyd was already making moves on stage. She made her Broadway debut in 2023 playing Mimi in the revived production of Merrily We Roll Along.

At the time, she was balancing a busy rehearsal schedule with her final classes for a musical theatre degree at the University of Michigan.

“There were a good couple moments when I was at work and in class at the same time,” Boyd said while talking about finishing her studies remotely.

She then stepped into the lead role of Juliet in the hit musical & Juliet, starring in the show from April 2024 to June 2025. Leaving school behind to lead a major Broadway show was a huge leap, but one she felt ready to take.

“Being here and leading a show wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t allow myself to change gears and do something else. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made,” she shared.

More recently, she played Molly Cunningham in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, directed by Debbie Allen. In that play, Boyd shared the stage with seasoned stars Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer.

A social media star with big dreams

Born on November 26, 2002 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Boyd grew up in a family focused on traditional careers. Her parents are both doctors, and her siblings chose careers in marketing and software engineering.

Acting was not her only option early on. She once admitted that if performing had not worked out, she likely would have followed her parents into medicine.

“I told myself I’m either gonna have to stop doing ballet and be a doctor, because that’s what I would have gone to school for if I hadn’t found musical theatre,” she said.

Besides her work on stage, Boyd is well known on social media. She started posting on TikTok in 2021 and has built a following of over 450,000 users with her funny skits, singing videos and family moments.

Now, she is preparing to step onto the global stage and bring her background in theatre to one of the biggest roles in superhero cinema.
