Celebrated Kenyan musician Wahu has spoken about the pressure that athletes face when representing their countries, saying the responsibility requires strong mental strength.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the singer shared her thoughts as conversations continued around national teams and the expectations placed on players during major competitions.

According to Wahu, athletes often experience different reactions depending on their performances. She explained that people are quick to celebrate success but can also be harsh when results do not go as expected.

“I think being part of a national team of any kind requires next-level mental strength,” Wahu said.

She noted that representing a country comes with intense pressure because every performance is closely watched. Wahu suggested that handling both praise and criticism can be difficult for those wearing national colours.

“People praise you when you do well, but when you ‘fail’, as everyone does from time to time, they come at you with another anger!!” she said.

The singer pointed out that mistakes and setbacks are a normal part of life. She explained that everyone experiences difficult moments from time to time, including athletes competing at the highest level.

Support during difficult moments

Wahu also reflected on the emotional side of representing a nation. She said she could only imagine the challenges athletes face when dealing with criticism after disappointing performances.

“I can only imagine what that feels like,” Wahu said.

Her remarks came as attention remained on the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa. Ahead of the game, discussions emerged online about which team people would support during the fixture.

Some individuals from different African countries said they would back Mexico, while others chose to remain neutral before the match. The debate focused on South Africa’s relationship with African migrants and past incidents that have attracted criticism in different parts of the continent.

The discussions were shared through posts, videos and photos across various social media platforms. Many of the comments centred on concerns raised by some Africans regarding xenophobia and attitudes toward foreigners.

Despite the debate surrounding the match, Wahu’s message focused on the pressure faced by athletes. Her comments highlighted the mental strength required to represent a country and deal with the expectations that come with both success and failure.
