Vybz Kartel praises Spice’s loyalty during his time behind bars
By Katemarthason Okudo, August 7, 2026Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel has paid a heartfelt tribute to fellow Jamaican star Spice, praising her unwavering loyalty and support during the years he spent behind bars.
In a birthday message shared on his Instagram page on Friday, August 7, 2026, Kartel described Spice as more than just a fellow artiste, saying she remained one of the few people who consistently supported him throughout one of the most difficult periods of his life.
Kartel further said Spice never stopped believing in him, even when he was unable to perform or interact with fans while serving time in prison.
He recalled how she continued mentioning his name in interviews and performances, ensuring his legacy remained alive despite his absence from the music scene.

The emotional message highlighted the close bond the two musicians have built over the years, both as collaborators and long-time friends in the dancehall industry.
“Happy Birthday to the Queen of Dancehall. From Portmore to the world, we’ve shown that greatness can come from the same place. You’re the Queen, I’m the King, and that’s always been love,” he wrote.
The dancehall star went on to thank Spice for remaining loyal throughout the years.
“You’re more than a colleague; you’ve been my sister, my work wife, and one of my realest friends. Through every chapter, especially during my years behind bars, you never stopped representing me. Every stage, every interview, every opportunity, you kept my name alive with loyalty that can never be forgotten,” he added.
A friendship that has stood the test of time
Kartel and Spice have worked together on several songs over the years and are widely regarded as one of dancehall’s most successful musical partnerships.

Their professional relationship has often been built on mutual respect, with Spice frequently acknowledging Kartel’s influence on her career while he has repeatedly praised her contribution to dancehall music.
In his birthday message, Kartel wished the award-winning singer continued success and encouraged her to keep representing Jamaican music on the global stage.
“May God continue to bless you with health, happiness, success, and many more years of breaking barriers and making history. Keep shining, keep winning, and keep flying the Dancehall flag high,” he wrote.
Kartel’s return after prison
Kartel’s tribute also reminded fans of the period when he was away from the music industry following his 2011 arrest. He was later convicted in 2014 and spent more than a decade in prison before his conviction was overturned. Following legal proceedings, he was released in July 2024.

Despite being behind bars for years, his music remained popular, with many artistes, including Spice, continuing to celebrate his influence on dancehall.
Since regaining his freedom, Kartel has returned to performing, releasing new music and reconnecting with fans around the world.
His latest message to Spice reflects a friendship that has endured beyond music, with the dancehall legend making it clear that her loyalty during his years in prison is something he will always remember.
