Uhuru Kenyatta mourns King Oyo, pays tribute to Uganda’s Tooro royal leader
By Paulette Mboga, September 12, 2026Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the passing of His Highness Oyo, the King of Tooro, describing his death as a profound loss to the Kingdom of Tooro, Uganda and the region.
In a message to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Saturday, September 12, 2026, Uhuru extended his condolences to the Ugandan president, Mama Janet, the Royal Family of Tooro and the people of Uganda.
He also expressed solidarity with the royal family and President Museveni during the difficult period of mourning.
Uhuru paid tribute to King Oyo for his vision and leadership, noting the role he played in advancing the development and wellbeing of his people. The retired president said the late king was committed to working with both Central and Local Governments in serving the people of Tooro.
Uhuru said the passing of King Oyo was not only a loss to the Kingdom of Tooro but also to Uganda and the region. He noted that the late king’s contribution would continue to be remembered by those who benefited from his leadership.
King Oyo’s death leaves a void
“The passing of His Highness Oyo is a profound loss to the Kingdom of Tooro, Uganda and the region,” Uhuru Kenyatta said in his message to President Museveni.
The retired president also highlighted King Oyo’s commitment to working with both Central and Local Governments to advance the development and wellbeing of his people. Uhuru said his leadership and vision had made an important contribution to the people he served.
Uhuru further noted that the late king’s passing had created a void that would be felt for generations. He expressed his solidarity with President Museveni and the Royal Family of Tooro as they mourned the loss of their royal leader.
“The late King’s passing leaves a void that will be felt for generations,” Uhuru Kenyatta said.
The former president extended his condolences to the people of Uganda as they mourned King Oyo, and his message also recognised the loss suffered by the Royal Family of Tooro following the death of the king.
Uhuru concluded his message by wishing the late King Oyo eternal peace. He joined President Museveni, Mama Janet, the Royal Family of Tooro and the people of Uganda in mourning the king and remembering his leadership.
