Uganda’s King Oyo Rukidi IV: What we know so far about death of world’s youngest reigning monarch
By Ascah Mwango, August 28, 2026Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom is mourning the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34.
The death of the monarch was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said King Oyo died at approximately 10 pm.
The announcement triggered an outpouring of grief across Uganda.
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba mourned the death of Tooro king in a statement posted on his X account on Friday, August 28, 2026.
“I am extremely saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV. Our country has lost a great royal at a very young age. He still had a lot to contribute to our beloved country. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Muhoozi wrote.

King Oyo died at 34
The Tooro Kingdom confirmed that King Oyo had died on Thursday evening, bringing an end to a reign that began when he was only three years old.
Reports indicate that the monarch had been receiving medical treatment in the United States before his death.
Earlier on Thursday, Tooro Kingdom officials said he was in critical condition and appealed to the public to pray for his recovery.
The official cause of death has not been disclosed.
Crowned king at three
Born on April 16, 1992, King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne in September 1995 following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He was only three years and five months old, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch and earning recognition from Guinness World Records.
Because he was a child, the affairs of the kingdom were initially handled through regents until he reached adulthood.
King Oyo formally assumed full responsibilities as monarch after turning 18 and was officially crowned in April 2010.
A three-decade reign
King Oyo spent almost his entire life on the throne, reigning for nearly 31 years.
During his reign, he became an influential cultural figure in Uganda, championing initiatives around education, youth empowerment, health, environmental conservation and community development.
Although Uganda is a republic and traditional monarchs do not exercise political power, the Tooro Kingdom retains significant cultural and social influence among the Batooro people.
Succession assured
Despite the sudden death of the monarch, the Tooro Kingdom has assured the public that the institution of the monarchy will continue.
The kingdom’s Prime Minister said a prince has been identified as the heir and that his identity will be formally announced to the Batooro people in accordance with Tooro traditions.
King Oyo’s death marks the end of one of Africa’s most unusual royal stories — that of a child who inherited a centuries-old kingdom at the age of three and remained its monarch until his death at 34.
