Ruth Matete worries about driving in Kenya after adjusting to Canada
By Paulette Mboga, August 10, 2026Kenyan gospel singer Ruth Matete has opened up about a driving challenge she may face when she comes back home after adjusting to life on the roads in Canada.
Ruth, who now lives in Canada, explained that she had to learn to drive on the right side of the road after moving there. She noted that Kenya uses the left side, raising the possibility that she could get confused when driving back home.
“Sijui kukuja home kama nitachanganyikiwa kiasi hapo kwa driving? Coz huku I had to learn to drive on the right na home ni keep left,” Ruth Matete said on Monday, August 10, 2026.
Ruth shared the comments while reflecting on a drive that she described as enjoyable. She explained that driving gives her a chance to calm down and spend time alone with her thoughts. The gospel singer also noted that her mood can determine the kind of atmosphere she wants while driving.
“Anyway, this drive was awesome. This calms me down,” Ruth Matete said.
Ruth Matete finds peace behind the wheel
Ruth explained that she does not always need people around her to enjoy herself. She said driving alone can give her time to think and meditate, especially when she is on a long drive. The singer also shared that she changes her choice of music depending on what she wants at the time.
“Unajua kujibamba ukiwa pekee yako ama wewe lazima ukue na watu?” Ruth Matete said.
The singer explained that some days she prefers having loud music playing while she drives. On other days, however, she wants complete silence as she travels for a long distance.
Ruth said the quiet moments allow her to think and meditate as she continues with her journey.
“Some days I want loud music and some days I just want total silence when driving for long. To just think and meditate,” Ruth Matete said.
Ruth currently lives in Canada with her daughter, where she has been building a new life. Her move abroad has seen her adjust to a different environment, including learning how to drive on the opposite side of the road from what she was used to in Kenya.
For Ruth, driving has also become a way to relax and take time for herself.
