Olive Burrows recalls losing composure after Obama called her by her name during interview

Speaking in a video shared on TikTok on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Olive reflected on her experience interviewing the former US president, saying one of her biggest takeaways was discovering that Obama was a relaxed person despite initially appearing defensive when she confronted him with difficult questions.
She said the experience taught her an important lesson about interviewing high-profile guests, particularly the need to create a relaxed atmosphere before diving into difficult or challenging questions.
“What I took from the interview with Obama is that he is a very chill guy. I got him; I hit him with very hard questions, so he was a bit defensive at the beginning. I learnt that you have to help your guests relax first,” she said.
Burrows said she also forgot to ask Obama for a photograph, only for the former US president to remind her that they should take one together.

The popular TV presenter, however, revealed that the moment that truly caught her off guard came when Obama walked into the room and greeted her by name.
Burrows said she immediately became overwhelmed with excitement and struggled to process the fact that someone as globally recognised as Obama knew her name.
She recalled the unexpected greeting as a moment that left her stunned, saying she essentially blanked after Obama said hello to her.
“Then he walked into the room and said, ‘Hi, Olive,’ and I was like, ‘OMG.’ I blanked, and I was like, Oh, Obama knows my name,” she shared.
The presenter also shared a humorous detail about the encounter, revealing that fellow media personality Cess Mutungi later asked her what Obama smelled like.
Burrows admitted that she was so nervous during the interaction that she had not even registered the details, despite the physical contact that came with posing for a photograph together.
She joked about being so overwhelmed by the moment that she was even concerned about whether Obama’s security detail would intervene during the photo opportunity.
“Cess Mutungi asked me, ‘How does he smell?’ I think I was so nervous that I did not even register that. You see, when you are taking a photo like this, there is some contact, and I was wondering if his security would tackle me,” she added.
Shy personality
The encounter offered a glimpse into the more personal side of Burrows, who described herself as a shy and introverted person despite working in an industry that requires her to regularly appear before large audiences and interview prominent personalities.
Burrows said that, at heart, she considers herself an ordinary person living an ordinary life but has been fortunate enough to receive extraordinary opportunities throughout her career.
To describe myself in three words, I would say that I am shy. I am also an introvert,” she said.
She traced her journey into broadcasting to the period immediately after completing university, saying she applied for a radio position and eventually found herself working in the media industry.
The presenter said her career journey has since taken her to major platforms and given her opportunities to interact with some of the world’s most influential personalities.
“And I am an ordinary person living an ordinary life, but luckily, I have been given extraordinary opportunities. I found myself on the radio after applying following the completion of campus,” she revealed.
