Oga Obinna proposes jail term for women who lie about a child’s paternity

Oga Obinna has proposed a law that would punish women who knowingly lie to men about the paternity of a child they raise together.
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, he suggested that a woman who falsely tells a man that a child is his should face consequences if a DNA test later proves otherwise.
Obinna said such a woman should either repay the money the man invested in raising the child or face a jail term. He proposed that the jail term should be at least five years for anyone found responsible for the false claim.
“Kuna idea niko nayo hapa. Mniambie kama inaweza tuone kama inaweza pitishwa law. That if you are a woman and you lie to a man that the child is his and raises the child, and later he realises after a DNA test that the child is not his, mambo ni matatu,” Oga Obinna said.
Obinna outlines his proposed law
Obinna said the first option would require the woman to repay all the money the man had spent on the child. He said the second option would involve a jail term for the woman if she could not repay the money.
“One, you pay back all the money that he has ever invested in the child, and if you can’t, go to jail and face a jail term. Not less than 5 years,” Oga Obinna said.
He also suggested that the same approach should apply when a man is accused of an offence but is later found to be innocent. Obinna said the person who made the accusation should face the same jail term that the man would have received if he had been convicted.
He explained that the punishment should depend on the jail term the accused man would have faced. According to his proposal, a person who makes an accusation that is later proven false would take the sentence meant for the innocent man.
“So ipitishwe hivyo. If you accuse a man and later it is proven that the man is innocent, the jail term that the man was to …you get to face it,” Oga Obinna said.
Obinna gave an example of how his proposal would work if a man was facing a seven-year jail term before being proven innocent. He said the person responsible for the accusation should then face the same sentence.
“If the man was to be given 7 years, then he is innocent; you are the one now to go to jail,” Oga Obinna said.
