Mosiria warns scrap metal dealers against buying stolen government infrastructure
By Valerian Khakayi, August 4, 2026Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a stern warning to scrap metal dealers against buying, handling or storing stolen government infrastructure, saying those found culpable will face arrest, prosecution and possible revocation of their business licences.
The warning follows the arrest of a person of interest caught vandalising security street lights in South B.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Mosiria said the person of interest confessed during interrogation to stealing government infrastructure and selling it to a scrap metal dealer in Land Mawe.
He further claimed that the dealer instructed them to burn the stolen government installations to change their appearance before selling them as scrap metal in order to conceal their origin.
“Today morning, while on field duty, I received a call from security guards from RSS Security Services informing me that they had caught and detained a suspect who had been vandalising security streetlights in South B,” Mosiria said.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed that he has been stealing government infrastructure and selling it to a scrap metal dealer in Land Mawe. He further said that the dealer instructs them to burn the stolen government installations to change their appearance before selling them as scrap metal in order to conceal their origin.”
Following the confession, Mosiria issued a strong warning to scrap metal dealers across Nairobi, saying the county government, in collaboration with the police, will conduct joint inspections of scrap metal yards to verify the source of materials in their possession.
“I want to issue a strong warning to all scrap metal dealers across Nairobi. Together with the police, we will be conducting joint inspections of scrap metal yards to verify the source of the materials in your possession,” Mosiria warned.
He warned that any scrap metal dealer found buying, handling or storing stolen government infrastructure will have the materials confiscated, be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, and risk the revocation of their business licence.

“There will be no hiding place for those fuelling the vandalism of public infrastructure.”
Warning to vandalisers
Mosiria also warned individuals involved in vandalising street lights and other public infrastructure, saying the county government would continue working closely with security agencies and members of the public to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“I also want to warn those engaging in the vandalism of street lights and other public infrastructure that your days are numbered,” he warned.
