Mosiria reveals his 93-year-old father studied with Mwai Kibaki at Makerere University
By Steve Ireri, August 26, 2026Nairobi’s Customer Engagement CE Geoffrey Mosiria has revealed that his 93-year-old father once studied at Makerere University alongside the late President Mwai Kibaki.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Mosiria said his father is still strong at the age of 93 and remains under his care, having been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that his elderly parent is well.
Mosiria revealed that he is the last born in a family of 22 children, placing him in a unique position as the one responsible for looking after their father in his advanced years.
“Mzae is 93 years old and still strong! Out of his 22 children, I am the last born and the one entrusted with the responsibility of making sure Mzee is okay,” Mosiria wrote.
He then shared details of his father’s time at Makerere University, where he studied alongside Kibaki, who would later become Kenya’s third President.
Mosiria recalled that his father had previously told him about the difficult experiences he and other Kenyan university students went through while studying in Uganda during the colonial era.
According to Mosiria, the Kenyan students encountered problems after they were labelled Mau Mau, the movement that was fighting British colonial rule in Kenya.
“He studied at Makerere University alongside the late President Mwai Kibaki. He once told me how, together with other Kenyan university students in Uganda, they suffered after being labelled Mau Mau, the militia group fighting for Kenya’s freedom,” he wrote.
He said the students were subsequently chased away by the Ugandan colonial authorities, forcing them to leave the country and attempt to return to Kenya.
However, their ordeal did not end when they reached the Kenyan border.
Mosiria said the students were also turned back by the Kenyan colonial authorities, who feared that they could join the Mau Mau movement after returning to the country.
“They were chased away by the Ugandan colonisers, and upon reaching the Kenyan border, they were also turned back by the Kenyan colonisers for fear that they would join the Mau Mau. They had to find their own way back home,” he recalled.
Government service
Mosiria further revealed that his father later built a career in government, serving as a senior government official under President Jomo Kenyatta and his successor, the late President Daniel arap Moi.
He said his father eventually resigned from government service and ventured into politics, where he worked closely with Kibaki.
The relationship between the two men remained strong over the years, with Mosiria recalling that the former President visited their family home in Kisii on several occasions.
“He hosted the late President and First Lady several times at our home,” Mosiria said.
He also shared a lighter detail about Kibaki’s visits to the region, revealing that the former President and his father would sometimes enjoy their favourite beer at Mwalimu Hotel in Kisii Town whenever Kibaki visited Gusii land.
“Both the late President Kibaki and my father enjoyed their favourite beer at Mwalimu Hotel in Kisii Town whenever Kibaki visited Gusii land,” he said.
Father’s political dream
Mosiria also revealed that his father had always wanted to enter politics and work closely with Kibaki, but did not ultimately achieve his ambition of securing a major elective position.
He said the political aspirations his father left unfulfilled have remained an inspiration to him, suggesting that his own desire to become a leader is partly connected to the dreams his father was unable to realise.
“My father always wanted to join politics and work closely with Kibaki. He had ambitions to vie for a serious elective position, but since he didn’t, his spirit lives on in me,” Mosiria wrote.
He expressed hope that he would eventually get an opportunity to serve in a leadership position, while also wishing his father enough years to witness that achievement.
“One day, God willing, He shall open a door for me, and may Mzee live long enough to see me become a leader in this nation,” he added.
