Mosiria challenges Kenyan politicians walking in New York City to do the same in Nairobi

Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has challenged Kenyan politicians seen walking the streets of New York City to do the same in Nairobi.

In a post he shared on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Mosiria reacted to footage showing Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho, Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale and Narok Senator Ledama Olekina walking through the streets of New York City.

Mosiria questioned the leaders over their street walk and challenged them to replicate the same experience back home in Nairobi, where residents face challenges including street begging and unemployment.

“Vile wanatembea majuu streets za New York in USA, mahali sheria inafanya kazi, hewa ni safi, pollution hakuna, traffic rules zinafwatwa na hakuna kuvuka kwa barabara mahali kuna footbridge,” Mosiria said.

He then challenged the politicians to return to Kenya and walk the streets of the country, suggesting that such an experience would expose them to some of the challenges ordinary citizens encounter.

“Pia wakuje watembee Kenya,” Mosiria said, before raising a series of questions about the issues facing Kenyans.

Mosiria specifically questioned the leaders about the situation facing young people in Kenya, as well as the implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“Waulize vijana kama wako na kazi, SHA inafanya kazi, mbona kuna beggars kwa streets na viongozi wako kazi?” he said..

Mosiria also questioned what he described as the responsibility of leaders to address these problems.

Mosiria asks how poverty will be addressed

The Nairobi County official went further to question how the country can address poverty while leaders travel and interact in cities such as New York.

“Na vipi tutamaliza umaskini?” Mosiria asked.

He argued that leaders should also experience the realities faced by ordinary Kenyans on the ground rather than only interacting with citizens during political activities.

Mosiria concluded his remarks with a broader criticism of politicians and their relationship with voters.

“Ukiwaona kwa ground, ni time wanataka kura zenu tu, na huo ndio mchezo wa viongozi,” he said.

Joho, Duale and Olekina are among Kenyan political figures currently in New York amid the country’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly.
