Mjaka Mfine recalls being bullied over her skin tone when she started creating content
By Paulette Mboga, September 12, 2026Mjaka Mfine has opened up about facing hate and bullying when she started her content creation journey, saying the harassment at one point made her want to quit.
Mjaka said the hate became intense when she began creating content and that she eventually realised such treatment would remain part of her experience. She explained to Alex Mwakideu that she had to decide how she would deal with it instead of allowing it to stop her from doing what she wanted.
“Nikianza anza, hate ilianza kukua mingi, the harassment until I noticed hizi vitu zitabaki kuwa. So it is either you choose how to live with them, or you choose not to live with them,” Mjaka Mfine said.
The content creator said she could not allow insults about her appearance to determine whether she continued with her work. She explained that being told she was being targeted because of her skin tone was painful, but she eventually chose not to let the comments stop her.
“You can’t stop something because ulitusiwa eti wewe ni mweusi. It is true that is your skin tone. I was bullied, yes; I wanted to quit,” Mjaka Mfine said on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Mjaka said she also had people around her who supported her during that period. She explained that her friends and family stood by her, with her father and sister being among those who were always there for her.
Support helped her keep going
The content creator said the support she received helped her deal with the emotions that came with the bullying. She noted that women can be emotional and explained that she sometimes found herself making assumptions because of what she was going through.
“But I had supportive friends; my family was also supportive. Baba yangu, sister yangu was always there,” Mjaka Mfine said.
Mjaka said the bullying eventually stopped being a reason for her to consider giving up on content creation. She explained that she understood the comments were focused on her skin tone and also included people saying she was not funny.
“We as ladies are full of emotions. Nikaanza ku assume. So that bullying was not a reason for me to give up,” Mjaka Mfine said.
She said the experience taught her to decide how she would live with the negative treatment rather than allow it to control her choices. Mjaka added that the criticism was also linked to how some people viewed her content.
“It was just about skin tone, eti huyu hata si mfunny,” Mjaka Mfine said.
