KRG The Don joins Mike Sonko’s NEDP as he eyes Nairobi senatorial seat
By Valerian Khakayi, September 22, 2026Musician and businessman KRG The Don has officially joined former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP), as he continues his quest for the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.
KRG announced his move in a social media post, sharing a message about starting a new chapter in his political journey.
“New beginnings… New journey. Let’s walk together to transform our city for better,” KRG said on Tuesday, September 22,2026.
He also explained why he had chosen to join Sonko’s party, describing NEDP as a people-centred outfit while highlighting Sonko’s influence in Nairobi.
“Hii ni chama ya wananchi alafu Nairobi godfather ni mmoja,” KRG said.
Sonko, who leads NEDP, welcomed KRG into the party and confirmed that the musician would pursue the Nairobi Senate seat under its banner.
“KRG amekuja kujiunga na the ruling party, yeye anataku kuwa senator wa Nairobi na sisi tumemukaribisha na mikono miwili,” Sonko said.
KRG’s decision to join NEDP adds another development to his already-public political ambitions. He had previously declared his intention to challenge incumbent Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 election.
Nairobi Senate bid
In an earlier interview, KRG said he was not intimidated by the prospect of facing Sifuna, arguing that no politician could appoint themselves to office because all leaders eventually return to voters for their mandate.
“Hamna tatizo, hiyo ndio ile kitu mimi nashanga na watu. Wananiambia. Hakuna mwanasiasa ananjichagua; awe ni Sifuna au nani, wote wanarudi kuomba kura kwa mwananchi,” KRG said.
He further argued that the political environment had changed, with voters increasingly demanding tangible results from elected leaders.
“Siasa ya sahi si kama ile ya zamani ya uonga, sahi kuja utuonyeshe ile kitu umefanya. If you are a senator, show us how much money umetetea county ya Nairobi ikapata, wananchi wakanufaika hiyo ndio kitu tutakupimas nayo,” he said.
KRG also outlined what he would prioritise if elected, placing service delivery and oversight at the centre of his agenda.
“My biggest agenda ni services zikuwe delivered kwa mwananchi haraka iwezekanavyo. That is my first agenda, second agenda, oversight of the county government,” he said.
His move to NEDP now gives his previously announced Senate ambition a party platform as the 2027 political contest in Nairobi continues to take shape. NEDP has been positioning itself for the upcoming General Election, with several aspirants seeking elective seats under the party.
