Award-winning musician Jacob Obunga, widely known as Otile Brown, has opened up about one of the most difficult periods of his career, revealing that there was a time he considered walking away from music despite being one of the most-streamed artists in the country.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday, June 13, 2026, the musician reflected on the challenges he faced in 2025, a year that saw him attract widespread discussion online following the release of his EP.

At the time, fans frequently debated his career direction on social media, with some questioning his place in the industry even as his music continued to perform strongly on streaming platforms.

A difficult season

While many people saw a successful artist whose music was reaching millions of listeners, Otile said his reality was very different behind closed doors. The singer admitted that he was battling personal struggles that left him emotionally exhausted and uncertain about his future in music.

“I was lost, I was fighting demons, that’s mostly what I can say. It was a test that I felt I was being born again,” he said.

According to Otile, the period pushed him to a place he had never experienced before. “And it wasn’t easy. It reaches a point where I even feel like quitting being an artist. I was in the darkest place,” he mentioned.

Despite the challenges, the musician said he eventually found a way through the difficult chapter, and I pulled through.

Living with expectations from fans

Beyond personal struggles, Otile also spoke about the pressure that comes with having a loyal fan base that has followed his journey for years. Asked how he handles criticism and expectations from supporters, the singer admitted that the pressure can sometimes affect him. “It depends, and I won’t pretend that it doesn’t scare me,” he said.

He explained that comments from long-time supporters often carry more weight because of the connection they have built over the years.

“Some scared me, especially from fans who you have been with for a time,” Otile said.

More than music and success

Otile also said being an artist is often viewed from the outside as a glamorous career, yet there are moments when it becomes emotionally demanding. He noted that the journey involves much more than fame, money, or chart success.

The singer added that protecting his peace of mind has become a priority as he continues to navigate the demands of the industry.

“But for me, the pressure when I look inside and out, I say it’s not worth my peace of mind. So the reason why I’m doing it is that I love it.”

Why he keeps going

Although there are moments when criticism and expectations become overwhelming, Otile said his passion for music continues to keep him motivated. He acknowledged that some of the strongest opinions often come from fans who have supported him throughout his career.

“Sometimes it’s more, and you also see your fans know that this is just deeper than that. It’s sometimes part of the game,” he concluded.

His remarks offer a glimpse into the realities many artists face behind the scenes. While fans often focus on success, streams, and public appearances, Otile’s experience highlights the emotional challenges that can accompany life in the spotlight, even during periods of professional achievement.
