I froze my eggs: Tiwa Savage urges women to consider egg freezing before 30
By Valerian Khakayi, August 25, 2026Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about freezing her eggs, urging women to consider the procedure before turning 30, as she spoke about her desire to have more children.
The singer explained that she chose to freeze her eggs because she would like to have more children in the future.
“I would love to have more children, which is why I froze my eggs,” Tiwa said.
She encouraged women to consider freezing their eggs once they reach 30, noting that many people may not be aware that women are born with a limited number of eggs.
“I would encourage women once they hit 30 to do that because a lot of people do not know that we have – we were born with a certain amount,” she added.
Tiwa narrated experiences of two friends, including one who struggled to conceive in her 40s after her eggs had declined and another friend who froze her eggs before later being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.
“I have two friends: one who wanted to have kids now in her 40s, but her eggs are done, and she wishes she had reserved her, you know, frozen eggs,” Tiwa said.
“Another friend who had frozen her eggs, and she ended up finding out that she had cancer and she had to go through chemo, but thankfully she had frozen her eggs. If she had not, she would not be able to have kids.”
Cost of egg freezing
Tiwa also criticised the cost of egg freezing, saying the procedure should be more accessible to women who want to preserve their fertility.
She argued that egg freezing should be affordable enough for more women to consider it as an option.
“I hate it; it is so expensive. I do not think it should be expensive. I think it should be something that is so affordable,” she pointed out.
How does egg freezing work?
Egg freezing, medically known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility-preservation procedure in which a woman’s unfertilised eggs are collected and frozen for possible use in the future.
The process typically begins with hormone injections that stimulate the ovaries to produce several eggs. The woman is monitored through blood tests and ultrasound scans to track the development of the eggs.
Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries through a procedure usually performed under sedation. The mature eggs are then rapidly frozen using a technique called vitrification and stored at very low temperatures.
When a woman later decides to use the eggs, they are thawed and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, usually through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The resulting embryo can then be transferred into the uterus.
Egg freezing does not guarantee a future pregnancy, and the chances of success depend on several factors, including the woman’s age when the eggs were frozen and the number and quality of eggs retrieved.
