George Ruto explains passion behind his matatu investment
By William Muthama, September 19, 2026President William Ruto’s son George Ruto has opened up about his decision to invest in the matatu business, revealing that his passion for the sector dates back to his high school days.
Speaking during an interview posted on Saturday, September 19, 2026, after unveiling six new matatus under his 98 Sacco, George said his investment was also driven by his desire to create job opportunities for young people.
Asked why he had invested heavily in the transport sector, George said creating employment was among his main motivations.
“There are countless reasons. Number one, we are providing job opportunities to young people,” he said.
He also responded to a question on why he had chosen to work hard and create opportunities despite coming from a prominent family.
“Because if I don’t do it, then who will?” George said.
Passion for matatus
George revealed that his connection to the matatu industry started long before he became an investor.
“The matatu sector has been a passion in my life for a very long time since I was in high school,” he said.
He explained that the opportunity to invest in the sector allowed him to turn that long-standing interest into a business.
“When I got the opportunity to invest, to become an investor and, you know, to do what I’m doing now, I couldn’t say no to that. So I guess that’s why I’m here,” he said.
God opened doors
During the commissioning, George had invited two pastors to pray over and bless the new vehicles before they left the garage.
Asked about bringing the pastors to the ceremony and what had humbled him most about his journey, George pointed to his faith.
“God,” he said.
“We are born in Christian families. We believe in God. He really opened doors for us,” George said.
He also highlighted the rapid expansion of his investment, noting that he had launched 17 vehicles in total, with one launched last year and 16 this year.
“Last year we launched one. This year we launched 16,” he said.
