Geoffrey Mosiria takes teacher to rehab for alcohol addiction
By Valerian Khakayi, July 10, 2026Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has revealed that he helped a teacher identified as Mwalimu Ibrahim Kahinga, alias Obama, enter a rehabilitation centre after he relapsed into alcohol addiction.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 10, 2026, Mosiria said he reached out to the director of the Rapid Rehabilitation Centre for Addiction, explained Obama’s situation, and secured his admission to the facility.
“Today, I personally took Obama to the facility, where he will undergo assessment and begin his journey to recovery. I reached out to the director of the Rapid Rehabilitation Centre for Addiction, explained Obama’s situation, and he agreed to admit him,” Mosiria said.
“I sincerely wish him the very best. I know the potential he has as a teacher, and I believe that if he fully commits.”

Obama’s addition
According to Mosiria,Obama had opened up about how he ended up on the streets after battling alcohol addiction.
He said Obama told him he had lost his job as a government school teacher, his family, and the life he had worked hard to build.
“He opened up about how he had ended up on the streets after becoming addicted to alcohol. He told me he had lost his job as a government school teacher, and with it, his family and the life he had worked so hard to build. Seeing him in that condition broke my heart,” Mosiria narrated.
Moved by his situation, Mosiria said he used his network to help Obama secure employment at a private school. However, after a few months, he left the job.
“He told me all he needed was another opportunity to work. Through my network, I managed to secure him a job at a private school,” he added.
“Unfortunately, after a few months, he left. I found him a second job, but once again, he walked away. Believing he still deserved another chance, I used my network for a third time and got him another teaching job.”

However, Mosiria said he was disappointed last week after receiving a video showing Obama intoxicated on the streets of Nairobi.
“Then last week, someone sent me a heartbreaking video of Obama, completely drunk on the streets of Nairobi. He was so intoxicated that he could barely recognise himself. I felt deeply saddened and disappointed. After all the effort that had gone into helping him rebuild his life, it seemed everything had fallen apart again,” he narrated.
“Today, Obama came to my office after learning that I had seen the video. He pleaded with me, admitting that he had relapsed into alcohol addiction and that it was destroying his life once again. He asked me to give him one last chance by helping him get into a rehabilitation centre so he could finally break free from addiction and start over.”
Who Obama is to Mosiria
Mosiria said his decision to support Obama was influenced by their past relationship, revealing that the two studied together at the University of Nairobi.
He said they lost touch after graduation until last year when they unexpectedly met at a popular church in Nairobi during a therapy session for people living on the streets.
“Obama and I studied together at the University of Nairobi. While I pursued my course, he was studying education. After graduation, our paths never crossed again until last year when I met him at a popular church in Nairobi during a therapy session for people living on the streets,” he revealed.
“I immediately recognised him, and we had a long conversation.”
