Dr Ofweneke calls out creators mocking Luhya culture for social media views

Speaking in a video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Ofweneke urged creators to stop using the Luhya community as the subject of jokes and viral content, saying the trend was becoming disrespectful and harmful.
He argued that while comedy and online content often draw from everyday life, repeatedly targeting one community with negative stereotypes only fuels division.
‘Leave the Luhya community out of it’
Addressing social media users across the country, Ofweneke said creators should avoid making the Luhya community the centre of content meant to generate likes, shares and online attention.
“There is something that has come to my attention, and if I don’t speak about it, it’s a very useless trend that will continue. If you want to trend using a certain tribe or stereotypical jokes, please use your own community,” he said.
According to the comedian, many videos circulating online mention Luhya men, women and cultural practices in a negative way, yet rarely highlight anything positive about the community.
He questioned why the community had become an easy target whenever creators wanted to go viral.
Says stereotypes should not be normalised
Ofweneke said creators should allow members of the Luhya community to tell their own stories instead of using stereotypes for entertainment.
“You talk about the Luhya men, you talk about the Luhya women, you talk about our culture. Some of you are using your TikTok videos to insult us and say negative things about the Luhya nation,” he stated.
He maintained that every community deserves respect and that cultural differences should not be turned into content designed to ridicule people.
“If there’s anything about our character, our society or our culture, let Luhyas speak for ourselves. If it’s about Luhya men, Luhya women, Luhya weddings or Luhya culture, please leave us alone to talk about our culture,” he added.
Calls for more respectful online content
The media personality further warned that using tribal stereotypes to gain popularity online could encourage unnecessary division among Kenyans.
He said creators should think carefully about the impact of their content before publishing it, especially when it touches on culture and identity.
“If you’re not going to praise us, leave us alone. Leave Luhya men out of your conversations and your TikTok videos. Leave Luhya women out of your videos. Leave Luhya culture out of your videos. Plain and simple,” Ofweneke said.
His remarks come at a time when conversations around responsible content creation continue to grow, with more public figures urging creators to balance humour with respect for different communities and cultures.
