Director Trevor challenges Kenyan brands to turn World Tourism Day into a national showcase

Kenyan digital content creator and filmmaker Director Trevor has challenged Kenyan brands to use World Tourism Day as an opportunity to promote the country and encourage more people to explore local destinations.

In a series of posts shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, August 20, 2026, Trevor called on airlines, hotels, restaurants, tour companies, banks, telecommunications firms, content creators and media organisations to work together ahead of World Tourism Day on September 27.

Rather than sharing the usual messages marking the day, Trevor wants brands to create a campaign that tells one Kenyan story and encourages people to travel.

Trevor wants brands to promote Kenya

Trevor said Kenyan companies could use their platforms to showcase the country’s tourism potential while also creating content that connects different industries. His proposal comes as brands increasingly use social media campaigns to join global events and create conversations around their products and services.

“Kenyan brands, can we please do something big for World Tourism Day on September 27? After seeing what you guys did with International Color Day, I honestly think we can take it a step further with tourism,” Trevor said.

He suggested bringing together different players in the industry, including businesses that are directly involved in tourism and those that can help promote destinations through their platforms. “Imagine all of us connecting the dots and telling one big Kenyan story,” he added.

Trevor said the campaign should go beyond simply acknowledging the day and instead encourage people to experience what Kenya has to offer. “Let’s actually create something that makes people want to travel, explore and experience Kenya,” he said.

Remarks follow International Color Day

Trevor’s latest proposal comes after he praised Kenyan brands for how they marked International Color Day on Thursday, August 20. The day celebrates the role and influence of colour in everyday life, including its importance in branding and communication.

Several Kenyan brands took part in the occasion by temporarily moving away from their usual signature colours, creating a different look for businesses that are normally identified by specific colours.

The move attracted attention online, with brands using the trend to show how strongly colour is connected to their identity.

Why colour matters to brands

Trevor previously explained that colour plays an important role in helping consumers recognise and remember businesses.

He noted that people can sometimes identify a brand through its colours even before seeing its name or logo. “Brand colours are more important than most people think. They help people recognise, remember and emotionally connect with a brand, sometimes without even seeing the logo or name,” Trevor said.

He welcomed the participation of Kenyan brands in International Color Day, saying the campaign showed how companies can creatively join global conversations. “It may look like a simple trend, but it’s actually a great reminder of how powerful colour is in building brand identity, and how Kenyan brands can creatively participate in global conversations,” he added.

With World Tourism Day approaching, Trevor now wants brands to apply the same creativity to tourism and create a campaign that puts Kenya’s destinations, culture and experiences at the centre of the conversation.
