Carol Radull mourns iconic English footballer and manager Kevin Keegan with heartfelt tribute

Kevin Keegan built a remarkable career in football as both a player and a manager. He became one of the game’s best-known figures through his achievements on the pitch and later on the touchline. His career included successful spells in England and abroad.
As a player, Keegan enjoyed great success with Liverpool, where he made 323 appearances and scored 100 goals during six seasons at the club. He also played for Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United. Along the way, he captained England and earned recognition as one of the country’s top footballers.
Remembered for his football journey
Keegan later moved into management and became one of Newcastle United’s most important figures. He helped the club return to the top flight before leading a team that challenged for major honours. Although they did not win the league, his time in charge remains one of the most memorable periods in the club’s history.
He also served as England’s caretaker manager in 1999 after Glenn Hoddle left the role. Keegan first planned to return to Fulham after the short spell. However, he accepted the job permanently after England defeated Poland 3-1 at Wembley and he received a warm welcome.
Liverpool also mourned the loss of its former number seven. The club said it was deeply saddened by Keegan’s death. He passed away on Monday at the age of 75 after being diagnosed with cancer last year.
