Bien explains why artists are expected to speak carefully about politics

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, he explained that audiences today pay close attention to what public figures say and often judge their political views. According to him, even choosing to stay away from politics is still seen as taking a position.
“The audience is woke. We take a stand to be apolitical. It is a stand as well. Or stand with a party that reflects our views and urban people’s views,” Bien said.
He explained that artists are expected to think carefully before making political statements. Bien said people quickly connect public comments to the country’s current situation, making it difficult for artists to speak without attracting criticism.
“You see now, for example, if Bien says one term, or two term, guys will be like, what is wrong with this guy? Fuel inapanda, amepewa pesa. We can’t be tone deaf,” Bien said.
Bien said artists cannot ignore what people are going through because audiences are aware of what is happening around them. He explained that the challenges people face shape how they receive comments from public figures.
Finding a careful approach
“And people expect us to be a certain way and never want us to comment on politics,” Bien said.
He explained that this creates a difficult position for artists because they are expected to entertain people while also being careful about public issues. Bien said there is pressure no matter which approach an artist chooses.
“And I always tell urban artists don’t comment on politics on Twitter. I realised that is the wrong approach,” Bien said.
He explained that he has changed how he looks at the issue over time. Bien said he came to understand that avoiding political discussions completely does not always solve the problem for artists.
“People will tell you to stick to music. So the best thing to do is put your protest in your heart,” Bien said.
Bien explained that artists often receive different expectations from the public whenever politics comes up. He said his experience has shown him that there is no simple answer, as people have different opinions about whether musicians should speak on political matters. According to Bien, artists must carefully consider how they express themselves while remaining aware of the issues affecting the people around them.
