By , June 17, 2026

Former US President Barack Obama was overcome with emotion after seeing a special skirt worn by his wife, Michelle Obama, during the Presidential Center Stakeholder Reception.

Michelle revealed that the elegant outfit carried a deeply personal tribute to her late mother, Marian Robinson, whose image was featured on the skirt.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Michelle shared that her husband became emotional after seeing the sentimental significance of her outfit, as he had not known about the tribute beforehand.

“I am so proud of my husband; he is really messed up right now. I am giving him some time because this beautiful skirt that my stylist picked up is of my favourite portrait of my mother,” Michelle said.

She explained that Barack only discovered the special design moments before she addressed the audience, while she had already spent weeks coming to terms with the beauty and emotion attached to the piece.

“He did not know it existed until just a few minutes ago, and I have had a few weeks to settle on the beauty of this skirt, but it is messing him up for good reason,” she added.

The former first lady went on to speak about the close relationship Barack shared with her mother, saying Marian had always admired the man he was and the way he cared for their family.

“Marian, she was so proud of her son-in-law and the man he is and has been to our family,” Michelle disclosed.

Marian Robinson, who passed away in May 2024 at the age of 86, was a pillar in the Obama family’s life and was known for her quiet strength, wisdom and unwavering support for her daughter, Barack and their children.

The heartfelt moment at the Presidential Center Stakeholder Reception offered a rare glimpse into the Obamas’ strong family bond and the lasting love they continue to hold for Marian’s memory.

On the other hand, Obama said that he became emotional while reflecting on his late mother-in-law, noting that she provided a loving and stable home for Michelle and her brother Craig on Chicago’s South Side despite limited means.

He also paid tribute to her husband, Fraser Robinson, describing him as a hard-working man who valued family and worked at the water reclamation district near Navy Pier.

“I got a little teary-eyed tonight thinking about my mother-in-law, Marian Robinson. She made a home for Michelle and Craig here on the South Side of Chicago, not with a lot but with a lot of love and hope and perspective and wisdom,” Obama said.

“Her husband Fraser Robinson, who got up every day and went down right next to Navy Pier, working in the water reclamation district. He showed what it means to work hard and to put family first.”

The former president further revealed that their lives reflected the best of American values, hard work, humility, respect, kindness, and integrity.

“They represent to me what’s best about this country and what’s best about our values and people who aren’t trying to get every last nickel and aren’t cutting corners when it comes to values and treat people high and low with respect and kindness and handle their business, just salt of the earth, bedrock people,” he added.

“There are people like that all across the South Side of Chicago, and there are people like that all across this great country of ours.”
