Abel Mutua explains why Maraga is his preferred presidential candidate
By Valerian Khakayi, September 25, 2026Kenyan filmmaker and storyteller Abel Mutua has explained why former Chief Justice David Maraga is his preferred candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during a candid interview with the Kisiangani Podcast on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Mutua said he would vote for Maraga if he is on the ballot and would even contribute financially to his campaign if he had the money.
“Mimi nakufa na Maraga; infact ningekuwa na hiyo pesa ningemchangia,” Mutua said.
He added that he would vote for Maraga early in the morning if the former Chief Justice was on the ballot.
“Mimi, I would vote for Maraga akiwa kwa debe nampea saa kumi na mbili asubuhi,” he added.
Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, is seeking the presidency in the 2027 General Election on the United Green Movement ticket. His campaign has focused on issues including constitutionalism, accountability, corruption and institutional reform.
Mutua questions familiar political faces
Mutua said he is surprised by Kenyans who continue to support familiar political figures, arguing that the country should consider new faces.
“Watu wananishangaza sana nikiona wanegemea side fulani na mimi naona tu ni the same people wako hapo, try new people for once,” he said.
He further argued that changing political leadership in 2027 would not necessarily bring the change many Kenyans are seeking if they vote in a familiar political face.
“Hakuna change inakuja if Ruto anaingia pale another term, hakuna mabadiliko inakuja, opposition wakiingia hapo hakuna mabadiliko they are the same they have been there,” Mutua said.
He also questioned how politicians who have served in government for several terms could suddenly present themselves as agents of change.
“Wewe tumekuwa tukikuona hapo terms karibu tatu, nne allover sudden wewe ni mjanja umepata direction,” he stated.
The filmmaker went on to say that he believed someone from outside the established political system would be needed to significantly shake up the country.
“If you really want to shake up this country, introduce someone from outside kwa sababu mtu yeyote mwenye tunasukumiwa sukumiwa hapa sahi ako kwa system, and that is why there will be no change,” he argued.
Mutua’s 2022 prediction
Looking back at the 2022 General Election, Mutua said he had previously warned Kenyans against viewing the contest as a two-horse race.
“Niliambia watu the same thing in 2022 wakanipiga vibaya, niliwaambia vile walikuwa wanasema ‘it’s a two-horse race’, niliwaambia, hao farasi wawili, hakuna mwenye anatupeleka Canaan. Watu wababa walikuwa wanamalizana na mimi kama watu wa Ruto wameniokota hii town,” he said.
He added that the outcome eventually led to criticism of the government within its first year.
“Walichagua mwenye walikuwa wanataka ata mwaka haikuisha tulianza kusikia mambo ya must go, I had seen it,” Mutua said.
Mutua has also questioned the political narratives surrounding the 2027 race, arguing that Kenyans are being presented with limited choices. He previously described the “Wantam” and “Tutam” political narratives as a design intended to box Kenyans with their options.
